Title: Mass vs. Weight Mini Lab
Date: ____________
Purpose: The Purpose of this mini lab is to examine the relationship between mass and
weight.
Hypothesis: ____________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
Materials: Triple Beam Balance, Newton Scales (2), Lab Goggles, a steel screw, a pair of
scissors, test tube rack, peg board, pencil, lab notebook, graph paper, ruler, and
markers.
Experimental Design:
Independent Variable: Mass
Dependent Variable: Weight
Constants: Altitude, same balance, same newton scales.
Procedure:
1. Create a table in your lab notebook to record the masses and weights of five
objects.
2. Measure and record the mass of the screw.
3. Using the appropriate newton scale, measure and record the weight of the
screw.
4. Measure and record the mass of the scissors.
5. Using the appropriate newton scale, measure and record the weight of the
scissors.
6. Measure and record the mass of the lab goggles.
7. Using the appropriate newton scale, measure and record the weight of the lab
goggles.
8. Measure and record the mass of the test tube rack.
9. Using the appropriate newton scale, measure and record the weight of the test
tube rack.
10. Measure and record the mass of the pegboard.
11. Using the appropriate newton scale, measure and record the weight of the
pegboard.
12. On a piece of graph paper, neatly copy the table with the masses and weights.
13. On a piece of graph paper, create a scatterplot of the masses and weights.
Data: Should be recorded in your lab notebook and on a piece of graph paper.
Results/Conclusions:
1. What can you conclude about the relationship between mass and weight?
2. What were the differences between the two Newton scales?
3. List some of the limitations with the Newton scales that you used.
4. How could you have improved your results?
