Who are we?
Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir
We have nearly 80 members and are a member of Making Music. Our
choral days attract an average of 100 singers from all over the country;
we are delighted to be hosting our 18th choral day performing the everpopular Requiem by John Rutter.
Steven Roberts
Steven is the Musical Director of the Philharmonic Choir. He graduated in
1988 with a first class Honours degree in music and in 1991 won the British
Federation of Young Choirs Award for a Choral Conductor. In 1992 he
worked as associate conductor to Laszlo Heltáy at the BFYC International
Singing Week in St Andrews, he also worked with José Carreras, Kiri Te
Kanawa and Lesley Garrett. Steven is also Musical Director of Altrincham
Choral Society, Honley Male voice Choir and Unlimited Voices. He has
conducted performances in some of the most prestigious concert venues in
the country, as well as in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Czech
Republic. He is a Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British and
International Federation of Festivals and is frequently in demand as an
Adjudicator. He is also proud to be a member of The Lord’s Taverners and
the Royal Philharmonic Society. He also ensures the choral days are great
fun, because he has fun himself.
John Rutter was a musical prodigy, writing at the family piano before he
was old enough to go to school. His musical talent gained him entry to
Cambridge University and the choir at Clare College, where choirs are a
tradition. Rutter not only sang, he wrote his first works while he was a
student. He continues to be one of the best-loved and most-performed
choral composers of our time.
