Applications are invited for the William Hodges Fellowship artist in residence for 2012.
The William Hodges Fellowship artist in residence programme aims to bring significant
New Zealand visual artists to Southland and allow them to work within and respond to the
Southland environment and community while they are also making a contribution to the
Southland community and its artists.
History
Although the roots of the William Hodges Fellowship extend back to 1981 it was in 1996 that the
Southland Art Foundation Artist In Residence was established by a joint partnership between
Southland Art Foundation (SAF); Southland Museum & Art Gallery (SMAG) and Southern Institute
of Technology (SIT). It was to provide the opportunity for significant New Zealand visual artists to
work with and within the community of Southland.
In 2000, SAF renamed the residency programme William Hodges Fellowship, in recognition of the
first recorded ‘European Artist in residence in Southland’ who was part of Cook’s second voyage
in 1773. Also in 2000 Burwell House was opened as the residence for the William Hodges Fellow.
The main financial contributors to the Southland Art Foundation and the William Hodges
Fellowship today are The Community Trust of Southland and SMAG.
Residents have included: Mark Adams, Laurence Berry, Kalvin Collins, Tracey Collins, Margaret
Dawson, Janet de Wagt, Geoff Dixon, Irene Ferguson, Murray Grimsdale, Ruth Myers, Joanna
Margaret Paul, John Robinson, David Sarich, Ross T Smith, Nicholas Twist, Lorraine Webb, Ans
Westra, Mark Braunias, Mary-Rose Cook, Peter Peryer, Miranda Parks, James Walker, Anna
Muirhead, Regan Gentry, Ana Terry & Don Hunter and Nic Moon.
Aims of the Fellowship
To provide the opportunity for significant New Zealand visual artists to work within and respond to,
aspects of the Southern landscape and environment.
To encourage and support artists who are making, or have the potential to make, a significant
contribution to the visual arts nationally and/or internationally.
To provide the Artist with the opportunity to gain inspiration from the Southern environment and
landscape.
To provide the opportunity to introduce new ideas, motifs and materials into the Artist’s own work.
To provide the opportunity for the people of Southland to have access to, and the opportunity to
interact with, the William Hodges Fellow.
To provide an opportunity for members of the public to have a greater access to a wider variety
and diversity of national and international art forms, practitioners and practices through
maintaining an open door policy with the William Hodges Fellowship studio.
To contribute further significant works of art to the Southland Art Foundation Collection.
The William Hodges Fellowship 2012
Funding
A weekly stipend of $500 is payable.
An allocation is made for electricity, telephone rental, work related tolls and travel expense
totalling $600 per month.
SIT will provide funding assistance ($100 + GST per week) for art materials to a total of
$1200+GST per residency. This financial contribution is for art consumables only and must be
purchased via SIT’s art technician, Rosalie Day. Expense claims from the artist will not be
accepted. All other materials shall be at the expense of the artist.
SAF will pay relocation allowance for travel between Southland & the Artist’s home. A total
allowance of $1,000 (including GST) for travel from the North Island and $500 (including GST) for
travel within the South Island. Half this amount to be paid on the artist’s arrival and the remaining
half at the completion of the residency.
Accommodation
Residents are invited to spend between 4 months and 12 months working in Southland while living
in Burwell House located near the centre of Invercargill. Burwell House can accommodate a small
family and has down stairs studio spaces.
Conditions of Award
The Fellowship will be open to any artist who is a New Zealand citizen whose permanent place of
residence is outside Southland.
Disqualified from eligibility will be those with criminal convictions and undischarged bankrupts.
The Fellow is expected to undertake tutoring or lecturing or an extended workshop generally with
arts students at SIT but may also be with SIT staff, schoolteachers and students and members of
the public. No formal teaching qualification is required.
Fellowships will be awarded for a four to twelve month term.
The Fellow is required to reside in Burwell House, Gala Street, Invercargill.
The Fellow is expected to work full-time on their particular art practice during the period of
residency.
The Fellow will be expected to provide works for a major exhibition at Southland Museum & Art
Gallery immediately following the residency. SAF will assist with some expenses ($3700) for
framing, interpreting, opening and promoting that exhibition. The artist is expected to pay all the
costs of executing the artwork. The SIT materials allowance ($100 + GST per week) can assist
with that. The works in this exhibition would normally be for public sale.
Gifting of Art work
The Southland Art Foundation will select up to two (2) works of art (one of which is a significant
work of art) from the William Hodges Fellowship Exhibition for the Southland Art Foundation
Collection which is located at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery. This work will have been
executed during the period of the residency, reflect the Artist’s current work and be gifted by the
Artist to the Southland Art Foundation Art Collection.
Copyright
Copyright for gifted works will be retained by the artist while SAF has unrestricted free access to,
and use of images relating to these works.

Additional information
The Fellow will be allowed use of facilities at SMAG & SIT, similar to other staff of those
institutions, if the Fellow is contributing by way of teaching at the Institute during the period of the
residency.
SAF has the power to terminate the residency if, in its opinion, the Fellow commits serious
misdemeanours or neglects to fulfil the conditions of the award to a serious degree.

A photographic portfolio of work must be supplied with a maximum of 20 photographs.

The application must include a clear statement of the artist’s purpose with identifiable benefits for
the artist and the Southland community.
The application must include a detailed work plan. This should include weekly schedules, intended
processes for contact with other artists, travel and commitments to tutoring/teaching arts students
at SIT or at other educational institutions, or community groups. Commitments to the exhibition
should also be given.
A CV, exhibition schedule, dated reviews and public and private collection details should be
included in your application.
The names of three referees are requested.
All applications must be presented in a manner, which is easily read.
