SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF

ST. ROSALIE CATHOLIC CHURCH
HARVEY, LOUISIANA
In the readings of Palm Sunday, we follow Jesus through the last
days of His earthly life. He entered Jerusalem in triumph to
complete His work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise
again.
In commemoration, we carry palm branches and raise our own
“Hosanna,” a word which means, “pray, save us!” We know what
awaits on the other side o f the city gates of Jerusalem: the
institution of the Eucharist at the Passover meal, Jesus’ betrayal by
Judas, His glory in the garden, His arrest, the denial three times by
His beloved friend Peter, His handover to Pilate, His crowning
with thorns, mockery, and His way of the Cross to an agonizing
death by crucifixion.
In St. Mathew’s account of the Passion, the death of Our Lord is
followed by earthquakes, tombs being split open, and the raising of
the dead. These dramatic events caused those present to exclaim in
awe, “Truly this was the Son of God!” As we listen to the
proclamation of the very center of our Faith, let us pray that we,
too, will be moved to lift our hearts and voices with these same
words.
Today’s Scriptures: Isaiah 50:4-7; Psalm 22; Philippians 2:6-11; Matthew 26: 1427:66

Dear Parishioners;
Beginning with the Vigil Masses this Saturday, we
enter into the holiest season of the Catholic Church. Passion
Sunday recounts the triumphal entrance of Jesus into
Jerusalem. On Holy Thursday we remember the Last Supper
and the institution of the priesthood. With the coming of
Good Friday the events prepare us for Easter Sunday, the
glorious triumph over sin and death.
The Passion narrative we read today is from the
Gospel of Matthew. This Gospel strongly strengthens Jesus’
status as God’s only begotten son. Matthew also stresses that
the events of the Passion must me understood as fulfilling
what has been promised in the scriptures, especially in the
Psalms and prophets. Also, Matthew shows that by
undergoing suffering and death Jesus not only fulfills his
destiny proclaimed in the scriptures, but also inaugurates a
new age of history which unfolds around the Resurrection
life. Jesus is clearly the obedient Son of God who remains
faithful even in the face of suffering. Matthew is convinced
that Jesus’ trust in God, tested by the trial of a brutal and
vindictive death itself, was not in vain.
Christ’s Passion teaches us not about our sins, our
failings, and our mistakes, for they are all too familiar to us.
Christ’s Passion teaches us about God’s love for us: bigger
than our sins, making up for our sins, making up for our
failings, and correcting our mistakes. Christ’s Passion
teaches us that God’s love always shines brightest when we
are most in the dark.
Last weekend I told everyone I had two women in
the rectory. This weekend our Mission preacher has arrived,
Fr. Dave Moreno, sdb. Fr. Dave has been a Salesian for 42
years. For most of his priestly life he has been involved in
assisting young men in their formation as they pursue their
education as Salesian Priests or Salesian Brothers. Fr. Dave
will be with us until Good Friday. I believe this is his first
visit to Louisiana. Let us show him some good Southern
hospitality.
Finally, I take this opportunity to invite you all to
not only the Parish Mission, but also to the Triduum services
that will take place beginning with Holy Thursday and
finishing with our Easter services.
May God bless all of you during this holiest of
season.
Peace be with you all,
Fr. John
