Pennsylvania Ayrshire Breeders Association
Chain Calf Contest Rules
Contest is open to PA ABA youth members between the ages of 8-14 as of January 1st of the current
membership year.
Must write an essay of 100 words or less, telling why they would like to own a registered Ayrshire calf, and
what they would do to care for it.
At least one written reference must be included with application.
Applications must be submitted by March 1st. A winner will be picked from the pool of applications when a
heifer calf is born, or becomes available.
The calf must be picked up within 30 days of birth, or the winner must pay for the extended feeding & care of
the calf. The winner of the calf is responsible to arrange for transportation of the heifer.
When the heifer is breeding age, she must be bred to a 100% Ayrshire bull. It is also recommended that she is
bred using sexed semen.
The first heifer calf must be given back to the PA ABA to be donated to another child.
If the heifer has to be culled without the return of a heifer calf, the participant will owe the PA ABA three
hundred dollars to help the Association purchase another calf.
The youth is encouraged to show their heifer in 4-H and local shows.
