Background to the post
Young Gloucestershire has a strong history of delivering a range of services for
young people over the years. In current financial climate and the focus on
Big Society Young Gloucestershire has made the strategic decision to focus
on volunteering within Young Gloucestershire and ensuring systems and
processes are in place to ensure this is a positive experience for all involved.
Young Gloucestershire has just implemented a new website, upgrade of
brand and communication tools and seeks to continue this work.
Context of the work
The volunteer co-ordinator will manage all elements of volunteering within
their own organisation, or on behalf of the organisation, for which they are
recruiting volunteers. Their role involves assessing an organisation’s needs and
then meeting those needs through the recruitment, placement and retention
of volunteers. In addition to this, the communication side of the role would be
to develop and actively promote the marketing and communication
activities of Young Gloucestershire.
The volunteer and communication coordinator will manage volunteers and
their relationship with those they come into contact with, including
employees and service users of an organisation. They also monitor, evaluate
and accredit volunteers. They work across all sectors, including public and
private, but predominantly in the voluntary sector.
This post will be a corporate post with a responsibility to the whole
organisation for communications, marketing and volunteer management.
Purpose of job
The volunteer and communications coordinator manages all elements within
Young Gloucestershire. The role involves assessing Young Gloucestershire’s
needs and then meeting those needs through the recruitment, placement
and retention of volunteers and appropriate communication methods.

Job Title:
Volunteer and communications coordinator (22.5 hours
a week)
Salary:
£22,000-£25,000 (pro rata)
Contract Term:
Until Dec 2012 (subject to funding)

Working Hours:
Due to the nature and pressing need of the work you
will be required to work such hours as are necessary for
the full and effective performance of your duties,
including evening and weekend work. The normal
working week is 37½ hours. Where the proper
performance of your duties requires that you work
excessive hours, you will be allowed time off work in lieu.
Holidays:
25 days per annum plus Bank holidays (pro rata).
Special Conditions: Evening and weekend work will be required. Frequent
travel in Gloucestershire and occasional national travel.

Job summary:
To manage and maintain a volunteer strategy and
communications process and ensure this is implemented
into Young Gloucestershire. To develop and actively
promote the marketing activities of Young
Gloucestershire
Main Purpose:
Volunteer management:
To publicise and promote volunteering opportunities
with individuals, community groups, professionals and
other relevant agencies and to promote signposting
opportunities to help volunteers into education/training
and employment.
To establish, organise and monitor regular supervision of
volunteers by appropriate Project staff. To work with the
CEO to develop ongoing funding for the role and
development of volunteering within the organisation
To provide quarterly reports on the activities’ progress as
requested.
To undertake training and other developmental
activities as required
To assist in the development of policies, procedures and
practices within Young Gloucestershire and YAF, with an
emphasis on volunteering.
To be responsible for the overall implementation and
monitoring of volunteers supervision, including carrying
out regular risk assessments of volunteer activities.
Communications and marketing:
Build on and develop promotional literature and
material, including brochures, advertising and media
campaigns with the inclusion of the people we support.
Develop and implement a marketing strategy to
increase awareness and raise the profile of the
organisation.
To continue the implementation of the new
organisational logo and ensure universal use in any
promotional material, advertising campaigns, website,
stationary etc.
Maintain organisational website with the objective of
maximizing the opportunity for the site to be viewed by
as many people as possible
Develop the organisational newsletter and monthly
bulletins with the inclusion of the people we support.
Work in coordination with the appropriate staff and the
people we support on marketing events.
Initiates media opportunities including on-air interviews
and feature stories.

Skills Knowledge and ability
Essential
 Awareness of current issues faced by the Voluntary Sector
 Demonstrable commitment to recognising and valuing young people’s
achievement in a broad range of learning settings.
 Evidence of recent commitment to personal professional development.
 At least three years’ experience working in volunteering
 High level of communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, including
experience of writing accurate and concise reports
 Experience of working on his/her own initiative to an agreed action plan
 Excellent negotiation skills and an ability to handle sensitive issues with tact
and diplomacy
 Experience of working with managers from statutory, voluntary and private
sectors
 Understanding and promotion of equal opportunities in both staff and client
work.
 Ability to work effectively as part of a team with shared and overlapping
objectives
 Ability to support members of an extended, geographically diverse team
 Experience of recruiting and working with volunteers from different races and
professions
 Driving licence
 A “can-do” approach
 Ability to inspire, motivate and enable the work of others.
 Ability to work flexibly
 IT skills
 Knowledge of how to make effective use of volunteers.
 Knowledge safeguarding practice and procedures.
 A real interest in communications and marketing and media. You will also
be an effective and engaging communicator with experience of social
networking sites.
