Population (2002) - 44.9 thousand residents
Nenetsky autonomous district is located in extreme northwest of the European
part of Russia. The most part of territory is behind Northern polar circle. A
surface is basically low plain. There are deposits of gas, oil field, peat and
building materials, mineral sources. Region is washed by the White, Barents and
the Kara seas. The climate is subarctic with cool summer and the cold long
winter. The average temperature of January is from minus 12°C in a southwest,
up to minus 22°C in northeast, July is from plus 6°C in the north up to plus
13°C in the south. Over 3/4 territories are located in a zone of tundra.
For the last few years the district has got the value of the important power
region that is connected to opening the significant stocks of hydrocarbonic raw
material in territory of district. The 81 oil field and gas are opened. There are
prospects of extraction of diamonds and gold. Reindeer breeding is the major
traditional branch of economy in district. The 12 collective - share and about 50
farms, and also economy of experimental-production is engaged in cultivation
of caribous. There are fish-processing combine, meat-processing factory,
hothouse combine, woodworking factory in district. Ground transport
communications in district practically are absent. There are two seaports. The
air transport is carrying out only regular cargo and passenger transportations.
The basic industries are food industry (fish, dairy and meat-packing) and
sawing. On the basis of development of deposits of oil fields, gas, coal is formed
Timan-Pechora territorial and production complex on district and Republic of
Komi. The fuel, food industries are developed.
The leading branches of economy of district are reindeer breeding, fishery,
hunting and sea hunting. Breeds of a fur animal are raised. The dairy cattle
breeding are developed in agriculture. Plant-growing is submitted poorly. Potato
and a turnip are raised, the hothouse farm are developed.
On volume of investments in a fixed capital for 2002 Nenetsky autonomous
district has made 412.49 million US dollars (7% from Northwest district). The
level of foreign investments has made 233 009 thousand US dollars for 2002.
