SERI Guidelines* for Appointment as
Harvard Research Associate in Ophthalmology
(Deadline: October 1st of every year)
Please check that requirements possessed by employee:
1. Manages a laboratory or a unit.
2. Job responsibilities must include conducting library searches as part of a
research project.
3. Coordinates research projects. **
4. Supervises laboratory staff. **
5. Includes technicians who are classified in laboratory grades of 5 or above
(Staff Associate or above).
6. Develops and designs protocols.
7. Provides expertise and training in methodology, laboratory procedures, and
equipment use.
8. Possesses a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Annual renewal of Associate appointment will be at the discretion of the
Director of Scientific Affairs.
Procedure for requesting Harvard Associate Appointment:
1. Faculty submits name(s) of technicians in their laboratory for appointment
consideration to Director of Scientific Affairs. Submission should include a brief
description of the research project the technician is involved with, as well as a
recent CV in Harvard format. Refer to
http://www.hms.harvard.edu/fa/handbook/purplebook/index.html.
2. Director of Scientific Affairs reviews the names and qualifications for
submission.
3. Director of Scientific Affairs prepares documentation and submits to the office
of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology.
This procedure reinforces the Institute’s belief that the technical staff provides
valuable skills and talent to the laboratory. Support for this proposal also
acknowledges their contributions to the Institute and encourages personal and
professional growth.
