VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION:
Evaluation and Management of Dizziness and Balance Disorders
(Intermediate Level)
Julie Knoll, PT NCS
Location: Pine Crest Ballroom at The Lodge
This is an intermediate course that will cover dizziness of all types, imbalance, head righting,
gaze instability, oculomotor and visual dysfunction, and positional vertigo. Vestibular
neuroanatomy and pathology will be presented, along with maladaptive cervical and visual
disorders. Specific interventions and exercise progression will be covered in the areas of
habituation, balance training, gaze stability, and particle repositioning. While teaching the
common principles of evaluation and treatment of the patient with dizziness and imbalance from
vestibular disorders, this course goes a step further in assisting the clinician in adequately
classifying patients to determine which type of symptom group will respond best to particular
interventions. This improves the outcome and reduces the duration of treatment by making the
most effective treatment decisions, once the specific evaluation is made. The Classification
System that will be presented has been developed over a period of 20 years working with dizzy
patients in a multidisciplinary setting including professionals in PT, Otology, Neurology, and
Optometry.
Julie Knoll, PT NCS - Julie began clinical practice in 1992 in Denver at Saint Joseph Hospital,
and went into private practice in 1995. She is co-owner of South Valley Physical Therapy, an
outpatient neurologic practice with four clinics in the Denver Metro area, and has specialized in
the treatment of dizziness and balance disorders, post concussive syndrome, multiple sclerosis,
movement disorders including parkinsons and dystonia, brain injury, and facial disorders. She
was a member of the interdisciplinary team of the Rocky Mountain Dizziness and Balance
Center for 15 years. She worked with the Colorado Neurologic Institute’s Deep Brain Stimulator
Program and developed the Physical Therapy examination protocol for patients pre and post
DBS placement. She was elected to participate as a member of United Healthcare/Optum
Health’s Physical Therapy Advisory Council for 3 years. Her special interest is in neuroplasticity
and using moderate exercise as medicine for chronic neurologic conditions. She is a board
certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist since 1997, and is both NDT and Vestibular certified.
Julie is a member of the APTA Neurology Section, the Vestibular Special Interest Group, and
the Vestibular Disorders Association, and actively reviews the literature in this area. Julie
teaches seminars across the US on vestibular rehabilitation, and has been an invited lecturer at
over 30 conferences. She has been awarded the Outstanding Physical Therapist of the Year and
the Bob Doctor Service Award by the Colorado American Physical Therapy Association.

Adults with low back pain account for a significant proportion of the patients presenting to
outpatient orthopaedic physical therapy clinics. Given the tremendous personal and financial
burden associated with low back disorders it is imperative that physical therapists adopt the best
practice initiatives in managing this patient population. Recent research has provided evidence
for the effectiveness of manual physical therapy interventions (both thrust and non-thrust) for
improving outcomes in the adult and aging adult with musculoskeletal disorders. For example,
the use of manual physical therapy, including both thrust and non-thrust
mobilization/manipulation, for patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis and hip
osteoarthritis is well supported. This two-day program provides the current best evidence and
practical application of manipulation and exercise techniques in the management of the patient
with mechanical low back pain and degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. and discusses how
manual therapy procedures are integrated into total patient management. The majority of the
course will be devoted to hands-on demonstration and participation of both examination and
thrust
and
non-thrust
manual
therapy
techniques.
Timothy W. Flynn, PT, PhD - Dr. Flynn is board certified in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy
(OCS), a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists
(FAAOMPT), and a frequent research presenter at state, national, and international meetings. Dr.
Flynn is widely published including 5 textbooks, 6 book chapters, over 60 peer-reviewed
manuscripts on orthopaedics, biomechanics, and manual therapy issues. Awards include the

Richard E. Erhard Orthopaedic Clinical Practice Award, the Steven J. Rose Excellence in
Research (twice), the AAOMPT Outstanding Research Award (twice), and the Distinguished
Alumnus- Marquette University Program in Physical Therapy. Dr. Flynn is the immediate past
President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and an
Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT). Dr. Flynn
is a principal in Evidence in Motion an educational company dedicated to elevating the physical
therapy profession. He is an owner and maintains an active clinical practice focusing on chronic
pain disorders at Colorado Physical Therapy Specialists. Dr. Flynn is a Distinguished Professor
