Topic : Detectives and crimes

Teaching objectives

:

By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

1. Language knowledge

:

A. understand and use the following new words and expressions: detective, innocent, guilty, mud, carpet, notice, necklace, admit, check, suspect, meant, insurance, the same…as, no longer, break into, go to jail, instead of, behind bars.

B. understand and use infinitives and gerunds.

2. Language skills:

A. understand the whole conversation and get the useful information from it through careful reading.

B. know how to describe the spot of crime.

3. Learning strategies:

A. go to the library or go online to search for more relative materials about detective in order to broaden Ss’ mind.

B. search for movies or TV plays about detectives and crimes.

4. Affect:

A. develop the ability to discover the facts through investigation.

B. cultivate the characteristic of honesty.

C. develop the teamwork spirit through the group work and discussion.

5. Culture awareness:

A. know how to investigate into a case in western countries.

A recorder, a computer, an overhead projector, and a set of flash cards

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Warming-up and leading in (5mins)

A. Warm-up by a short video: Detective Conan. (3mins)

B. Then talk with the Ss about the cartoon ----Detective Conan in order to arouse their interest and guide their attention to the topic today. (2mins)

Step 2 Pre-reading activities (11mins)

A. Before going to the conversation, present the new words and expressions by means of using realia and setting the scene. (4mins)

B. Listen to the record and practice after the record on the new words and expressions. (5mins)

C. Guiding questions: What happened in the story? What is the man doing? Who was the thief? (2mins)

Step 3 While- reading activities (13mins)

A. The first reading: With the guiding questions mentioned above, get the main idea of the conversation and find the answers to the guiding questions. (5mins)

B. After the first reading, check the answers and see if Ss have understood or not.

C. The second reading: Ask Ss to find out those useful phrases and expressions. In addition, ask them to find out the use of infinitives and gerunds. (3mins)

D. After the second reading, give chances to Ss to show what they have found.

Step 4 Post-reading activities (15mins)

A. Sum up the main language points (5mins)

On the functions of the words and expressions.

B. Sum up the usage of infinitives and gerunds briefly. (5mins)

C. Divide the Ss into groups and discuss what personalities should a good detective own? (3mins)

D. Choose some of the groups to present their ideas and reasons. (2mins)

Step 5 Assignments (2mins)

A. Do the exercise on page 19.

B. Review today’s content and preview the two interviews on page 20.

C. See a movie about crime and detective, then write down impression of view.

Reserve activities:

Guessing game: Make a set of flash cards with the names of different movements or gestures. Then ask them to find a partner and play the game together. One of them acts, the other one guesses the actions in two minutes. The winners can get a price at last.
