2. JOB PURPOSE
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Antimicrobial Stewardship will provide strategic and
clinical leadership to NHS Tayside across the spectrum of antimicrobial prescribing and
stewardship ranging across all NHS Tayside services including independent contractors.
The focus of the role will be to drive improvement of antimicrobial practice by empowering
nurses to influence antibiotic management. This will require establishing an effective clinical
evidence base through research and audit of the role of ward nurses in influencing
antimicrobial prescribing, which will improve antimicrobial prescribing for prophylaxis and
treatment.
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will focus on four main areas: Clinical Practice

SCOPE AND RANGE
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will lead, facilitate and support clinical staff with the
aim of improving the outcomes for patients through antimicrobial stewardship. This
will be achieved through expert knowledge, excellent influencing, negotiation and
communication skills, by offering access to evidence based advice and information,
professional support, clinical and prescribing supervision.
The post holder will be employed by NHS Tayside Nursing Directorate and will work
collaboratively with a wide variety of multi-professional teams including the
Antimicrobial Management Team and Infection Control & Management Team. On a
daily basis the post holder will be a core member of the AMT
Antimicrobial stewardship in Scotland has to date primarily targeted the practices of
doctors and pharmacists and how these professions may impact the development of
antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infection. However antimicrobial
stewardship requires a clinical team approach and nursing staff can contribute to this
as part of their routine care of patients. Nursing leadership is required to embed
antimicrobial stewardship within the role of all nursing staff involved in the
administration and monitoring of antibiotic therapy. The Scottish Antimicrobial
Prescribing Group have identified the following aspects of antimicrobial resistance
(AMR) and other patient outcomes in which nurse involvement could impacttreatment specificity; duration of treatment; route of antimicrobial administration;
surgical prophylaxis; timing of antimicrobial administration; therapeutic drug
monitoring, outpatient parenteral therapy (OPAT) and optimising collection of clinical
samples for microbiology.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will:
Act as an expert practitioner, demonstrating advanced theoretical and practical
knowledge and skill beyond that associated with traditional nursing roles, including
the integration of research evidence into practice via the process of expert clinical
reasoning and decision-making
Develop, establish and implement guidelines and nurse led initiatives, particularly
where precedents do not exist
Contribute to the development and promotion of, with other members of the multiprofessional team, care pathways for referral of particular groups of patients with the
aim of disseminating good practice and improving patient outcomes throughout NHS
Tayside
Make independent clinical decisions and initiate investigations, care and treatment.
As part of the AMT, review of key antibiotics and usage [ALERT] or management of
key HAI’s [e.g CDI, SAB], particularly in important therapeutic areas, will be a key
element of the post
Interpret and analyse complex clinical and non clinical facts to regularly provide
expert advice and second opinion to other health care professionals, including when
views may differ or conflict
Utilise expert reassessment to ensure that the management of planned interventions
with other colleagues is maintained
PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP
The post holder will:
Provide professional leadership and vision to nursing staff and others and
consultancy services to all stakeholders in context of antimicrobial stewardship.
Act in an advisory capacity to NHS Tayside regarding issues related to antimicrobial
practiceprescribing and stewardship.
In collaboration with colleagues create an effective evidence base of the role of
nursing in antimicrobial stewardship and improved patient outcomes




Be an active participant in professional organisations and national networks in order to
influence and lead professional and service development
Ensure publications in journals to reflect research and development activity within
antimicrobial stewardship
Represent NHS Tayside at relevant meetings and conferences
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
The post holder will further disseminate models of practice through conference
presentations and local teaching activities
In collaboration with academic institutions, medical and nursing colleagues contribute to
the development of undergraduate and post graduate training programmes locally and
nationally
In collaboration with the University of Dundee, the post holder will undertake teaching
duties (including research supervision) and contribute to increasing research capacity in
the field of antimicrobial stewardship.
Disseminate good practice and service innovation by means of lecturing, research and
publication
In collaboration with a number of national professional networks e.g. NES Health
Scotland contribute to developments in training and education
PRACTICE AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT, AUDIT, RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
Analyse, appraise and act upon contemporary research evidence
Promote a research environment within NHS Tayside offering support and guidance to
staff undertaking research projects relating to antimicrobial stewardship
Work alongside the antimicrobial management team by initiating and supporting the
development of monitoring systems/audit tools to ensure the provision of high quality
practice of antimicrobial management.
Championing the use of continuous quality improvement approaches, innovation and
wider service redesign techniques to identify gaps in service and work in collaboration
with relevant colleagues to address gaps highlighted.
Participate and support the organisation in the collection & analysis of antimicrobial
prescribing pattern data to identify areas for improvement and involvement in audit e.g.
point prevalence survey’s.
Develop strong links with colleagues in the Antimicrobial Management Team and
Infection Control & Management Team offering nurse leadership enabling a multidisciplinary approach to stewardship.
COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
Communication
The Advanced Nurse Practitioner requires to have highly developed communication skills and
to be adept at working with a wide range of clinical teams, e.g. Infectious Disease Service,
Medical, Nursing, Pharmacy, Microbiologists, Infection Control & Management and Allied
Health Professionals in relation to all aspects of antimicrobial stewardship, and to have the
ability to form effective working relationships across all levels of staff both within NHS Tayside
and nationally.

Qualifications

Registered General Nurse


Degree and to complete a Masters within 3 years

Experience in senior post at Band 7 (or equivalent) or above working in a clinical

SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
The post holder requires to develop systems both manually and by use of complex databases
and provide management

All aspects of Information Technology would be used very frequently e.g. PC and

searching, email, and preparation of presentation using power-point and CD burning

faeces, blood unpleasant smells and occasionally physical or verbal aggression

Practice will be autonomous and the post holder will adhere to the legal and ethical
framework established by the NMC and national legislation, and work within NHS
Tayside’s local policies, procedures and guidelines

The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £39,239 to £47,088
per annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale
on appointment is normally at the minimum but may be
higher subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Please note the salary and band for this post are indicative
only and are subject to Agenda for Change Job Evaluation.
Hours of Duty

Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are 37.5 hours per week.
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16
and 70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable
pay, which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example,
overtime or travelling expenses.
