5.1 Student requires to finance their own expenditure in accordance to the preparatory English, historical,
and archival courses in Yogyakarta and Dutch course in Jakarta. Do you wish to pay such expenditure?

6. Personal interest and academic motivation
Answer the following three questions in no more than 200 words each explaining the following (use a
separate page if necessary).
6.1 Can you describe your study (and if possible, research) experience and explain your specific study interests?
6.2 To what extent is the ENCOMPASS programme geared towards fulfilling your academic needs?
6.3 How can or should the ENCOMPASS programme contribute to the development of historical research
at your home university or country, according to your opinion?
6.4 Please write a short paper (max. 5 pages) concerning your specific historical research subject fitting into the
general ENCOMPASS study themes (see also text brochure), including a) Your provisional research topic, b)
A short historiographical or theoretical-historical consideration, c) An exposé on the subject, divided in 4 or 5
main themes, d) A short explanation why your research topic is important to study, and why you would need
to improve your knowledge on the English and Dutch languages (should be added seperately).

Checklist and notes:
1. Admission deadline 2 February 2007
2. You are required to include transcripts and certified copies of your degrees and
diplomas.
3. You are required to include a certified statement of proficiency in both written and
spoken English from TOEFL, IELTS or another recognised authority in addition to a
statement of level of proficiency from your local academic supervisor.

for Encompass, Bambang Purwanto
6. The announcement of the students to joint the prepatory course will be taken by the
fourth week of February 2007
7. The prepatory course and interview as a part of selection process at Universitas
Gadjah Mada will take place in March and April 2007, student requires to finance
their own expenditure
8. The Leiden Scholarship Committee will take the final decision regarding the
admission in May 2007
9. The Dutch language course at Universitas Indonesia will take place in July 2007,
student requires to finance their own expenditure
10. The students will arrive in Leiden on 15 August 2007, a full scholarship will be
awarded
