real people and events may contain
superhuman items

All countries have an oral tradition of
stories that are passed down through
generations and then written down.
Although there are different genres in
different cultures, they share cross cultural
common themes such as love, jealousy,
etc... universal themes.
Specific types of literature have specific
elements and characteristics.
Illustrations enhance and reflect text.
Many literature styles attempt to teach and
explain a concept.
Setting and culture influence literature.
Attitudes change in different cultures and
time periods.
Approximate Length: 2-3 weeks

Choose appropriate leveled text materials.
Provide oral/written definition for each
genre stating at least two genre
characteristics.
Match a genre excerpt with its style.
Summarize orallyor in writing an excerpt
from genre selections.

each genre.
Engage in literary discussion of each style
drawing cross curriculum connections
between the genres and other subjects i.e.
science (mythology and constellations),
social studies (maps and countries of
literature origin), language arts (writing
original stories in the genres)
