ANATOMY OF A COMPOSITE VOLCANO
NAME: ______________
Part I: (10 marks)
On a separate piece of paper (8 ½ x 11”), you will draw a volcano. You must use the entire
sheet of paper for your drawing (no postage stamps, please!) When you are finished the
drawing, name the volcano (Mount “your choice”).
You may use any reference available to you, including the textbook. You must label all
relevant parts of your drawing and colour using felts, pencil crayons, etc. – be creative.
The following list of structures must be included in your drawing. The location and
orientation is up to you – but all must be clearly visible and labelled!

Magma Storage Chamber (located at the base of vent in crust)
Source of Magma (connected to magma storage chamber located in the mantle)
The Moho (see below), crust and mantle
Lithosphere and aesthenosphere
To start your drawing, draw a 20 cm line along the bottom of the page roughly 5 cm from
the bottom. This line is the Moho – the crust/mantle boundary. Make sure you clearly
label the lithosphere and the asthenosphere as well.
Part II:(10 marks)
On a separate sheet of paper, write an imaginary description of your volcano. In
particular, describe:
a) the events leading up to the eruption (i.e., What were some of the warning signs
that the volcano gave the day before the eruption?)
b) the nature of your volcano’s eruption (i.e., what did it look like when it erupted?)
c) what the area looked like following the eruption of your volcano.
One sentence answers are not acceptable – be creative!
Staple the two pages together with this assignment sheet on top.
Due: Tuesday, November 3rd.
