When it comes to mindfulness, Xxxx walks the walk
Xxxx was suffering with a painfully swollen knee that was preventing her from living the life
she wanted.
“I was at the point of considering exploratory surgery,” Xxxx, AGE, says.
“Through Feldenkrais lessons with Susie King I discovered the link between my stiff left foot
(I had broken a bone in this foot two years earlier) and the way I stood and walked, which in
turn affected my left knee.
“I developed a new awareness of the position of my body in everyday situations, and an
ability to subtly adjust this. The swelling around my knee resolved after four individual
lessons and it has been fine since.”
The Feldenkrais Method is an embodied learning practice which, through awareness in
movement, allows people to let go of old physical, mental and emotional habits that are
limiting their potential and causing pain.
Named after the technique’s creator, Moshe Feldenkrais, the method can take the form of
group classes, known as Awareness Through Movement lessons or one-on-one treatments
known as Functional Integrations.
Xxxx, of SUBURB, says the benefits go well beyond the physical improvements.
“What is different in my life because of Feldenkrais? Four words sum it up - relaxed,
grounded, energised and strong,” Xxx says.
“Since I came to Feldenkrais eight years ago, I have attended group workshops because of
the link I experience between the body and mental well-being - I think of Feldenkrais as
mindfulness through the body.
“So while workshops may focus on areas such as walking, hips and knees, neck and
shoulders etc, the additional benefits for me are with the nervous system. I enjoy feeling
calm, strong, refreshed and energised.
“I also return to individual sessions to get back on track at times of ‘overload’. I look to
Feldenkrais to help me maintain a sense of ease and graceful movement into the later
years.”
Feldenkrais practitioners will be offering introductory workshops as part in this year’s
Timeless Body event, which will see practitioners from across Queensland and Northern
NSW running workshops stretching from Townsville to Brunswick Heads in March.
Susie King will offer a workshop on Sunday, March 17 2013, from 10am to 1pm, at Bardon
Counselling & Natural Therapy Centre, 151 Boundary Rd, Bardon, at a cost of $40.
