Requirements of the new Kalamazoo Curriculum

Sophomore Seminar* (or two Cultures courses)**

Senior Seminar***

An array of courses of your choice that enhance and support your deepest interests and allow you to explore new terrain

Mark if completed and when, OR indicate plans for completion

Three Cultures courses

Areas of Study (literature, fine arts, creative expression, history; social science; natural science, mathematics, computer science; philosophy, religion) and QR

LACC No specific requirement, but LACC-like events will continue to be offered

*Sophomore seminars consider topics or issues from multiple perspectives, foster effective communication (written and spoken) and cross-cultural inquiry, and prepare students to participate in study abroad and live in an interdependent world. Some Sophomore

Seminars also count as part of a particular major.

** Completion of two cultures courses will satisfy the sophomore seminar requirement.

***Senior seminars are either (1) disciplinary, and thus integrate students' experiences around a particular major, or (2)

interdisciplinary, in which seniors from diverse majors apply their particular training and perspectives to a topic or problem. Senior

Seminars offered within a particular major may also count towards that major’s requirements. For continuing students, faculty are identifying short-term alternatives for the senior seminars in disciplines where such courses do not exist.

PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS

REFLECTION: BUILDING MY OWN EDUCATION

What do I care about most? What are my passions and deepest interests? What do I do well? What courses and subject areas have I found most intriguing or compelling?

What have I learned about myself since I’ve been at K? Have I changed? If so, how? How have I stayed the same?

How do the different things I’ve done (inside and outside the classroom) connect?

DEPTH: PRIMARY AREAS OF STUDY

For Sophomores o What major am I considering? How have I explored possible majors? What courses will help or have already helped me identify my major? What courses might be related to it?

For Juniors o Why did I choose my major? o What courses have I taken--outside my major--that are related to it and support it? What would I like to take? o If I have a double major, a minor, or a concentration, what am I trying to achieve?

For Seniors o What have I learned by studying one area (my major, for example) in depth? Where has it led me? What might lie ahead in the future?

BREADTH: EXPERIENCING THE LIBERATING ARTS

What have I done and what will I do to make my education rigorous?

What courses have helped me step outside my comfort zone? Why is this worth doing?

What do I still want to explore? What new knowledge, skills and attitudes might I learn?

What does breadth look like for me? How have I achieved breadth so far (list courses and activities)?

INTERCULTURAL, INTERNATIONAL, AND GLOBAL LEARNING

Kalamazoo College offers an array of courses on intercultural, international, and/or global issues. Whether or not

I go on study abroad, how will I develop/have I developed my international awareness and intercultural understanding?

What have I already experienced and/or studied that has helped me learn more about people of different backgrounds and cultures?

How can I expand that learning through co-curricular experiences and coursework at K, on- and off-campus?

For Sophomores and Juniors o Am I going on study abroad? If so, where? If not, how will I expand my cross-cultural skills? Have I completed my language study?

For Juniors and Seniors: o How did study abroad and/or other cross-cultural experiences—and coming back--affect me? What have

I learned?

THE CAPSTONE

For Sophomores: What preliminary thoughts do I have about my SIP?

For Juniors: What plans am I making about my SIP (possible topics, department/s, advisor/s)? What do I want to learn and accomplish?

For Seniors: What have I learned and accomplished by doing my SIP?

LOOKING AHEAD

What kinds of things do I envision myself doing in the future?
