Behavioral Neuroscience Research Assistant Application

Thank you for your interest as an RA in the Kinney Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory!

As a research assistant you will have a number of responsibilities including but not limited to:

Biweekly lab meetings: Expectation is to read the selected neuroscience article and come prepared to thoroughly discuss the article. RAs take turns picking out articles and leading the discussion.

Lab help: 2 research assistants are assigned each week to come in and take care of general lab duties which includes updating inventory, cleaning lab ware, filling water carboy, etc… The number of times an RA comes in for lab help depends on the number of RAs but is typically 2-3xs per semester.

Handling shifts: We typically handle our rodents numerous times before starting behavioral testing to reduce anxiety.

Behavioral shifts: We focus on various learning and memory tasks, which can be quite time consuming. We expect our RAs to evenly spread work hours amongst themselves to cover these shifts. During a behavioral experiment this typically works out to 10-12 hours/week.

OPTIONAL AREAS OF OUR RESEARCH:

Bench work: We perform a number of biological assays including western blots, immunohistochemistry, ELISA and PCR. We DO NOT require RAs to participate in bench work but are more than happy to teach these techniques to those who are willing to put the extra time and effort into learning them.

Data Analysis: All of our behavioral testing and bench work results in a lot of data that has to be analyzed. Like bench work, we DO NOT require RAs to analyze data but are more than happy to teach those interested in analyzing data and utilizing SPSS.

If you feel like this is the research laboratory for you, please feel out the below form and return it to kinneylab@gmail.com

. We typically accept new research assistants at the start of each semester but are open to mid-semester additions if there is a particularly good fit or a need arises.
