About Us
AcademicaPress is an independent scholarly press specializing in monographs, revised
dissertations, primary sources, bibliographies, textbooks, and other books reflecting
scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. Our imprint, Maunsel & Co., specializes in
scholarly research in Irish studies.
Academica seeks to publish the very best research monographs and studies produced by the
international academic community. We are particularly interested in reviewing works in
social science, literature & language and literature, and Irish studies. Our titles are peerreviewed and published without subsidy.
We believe that a successful publication is based on a wide distribution of each work. Since
advance research is carried out in university centers, the key instrument for the acquisition
of scholarly books is the library. For this reason, we concentrate our marketing efforts in
most cases on direct mail communication with librarians. Reviews also play an important
part in librarians' as well as scholars' acquisition decisions, so we make available at least 35
review copies of each of our titles to scholarly journals around the world. We also work in
conjunction with various distributors who specialize in scholarly publications, such as
Blackwell and Baker & Taylor, as well as with distributors who focus on trade publications
and have wider access to general bookstores.
We base our acceptance policy upon peer reviews of submitted works. After approval,
however, Academica differs significantly from other publishers. Most academic presses are
discouragingly slow to process an accepted work. There are many reasons for this, but the
upshot is that scholars, particularly in the social sciences, frame their projects in terms of
half-decades. We usually publish within nine to twelve months after acceptance. Our short
runs lead to a high number of books published annually through our own facilities. Thus,
quality and prompt production are re-introduced to scholarly publishing.
We invite our authors to participate actively in the publication of their work and work closely
in cooperation with them at all stages of the publication process. Short-term printing, wide
distribution, and author cooperation are central in developing an important list of scholarly
monographs.
