CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR
ANTARCTICA
Adventure Sailing Expedition
with
Team Mowbray Pty Ltd
The following quantities/type of clothing should be used as a guide only.
It is the guest’s responsibility to be suitably prepared.
We suggest you plan to wear some of your clothing en route to South America to
keep packed baggage to a reasonable level.
If you have ever been snow skiing then you can use this as a reference point
when thinking about clothing type etc.
We suggest you don’t rush out and buy expensive clothing. Ask around
and you will be amazed at how many family or friends have snow ski
or adventure type clothes or similar in their wardrobe that they might
be only too happy to lend
You will be on board for in excess of 3 weeks and there are no
Laundromats in Antarctica however you can rinse and dry clothes on board
In general terms a four layered system is reliable:
Layer #1 - Thin light weight thermals long legged and long sleeved
Layer #2 - A medium thickness layer consisting of clothing similar in weight to
track pants and medium weight long sleeved thermal tops
Layer #3 - The thickest layer with pants similar to snow ski pants, thick track
pants, thick woollen jumpers, specialised thermal zip up windcheaters etc
Layer #4 - Wet weather jacket and pants to provide water and snow proof outer
shell supplied on loan by Team Mowbray. The wet weather gear is intended to
be worn at sea as well as ashore if needed when exploring however you may
wish to bring along a lighter weight waterproof jacket/pants
Head, Hands, Feet and Eyes
A disproportionate amount of body heat is lost through the head plus the
extremities of the body (hands and feet) are usually affected first by cold. It is
extremely important to have suitable quantities and quality of protective foot,
hand and head wear.
Suggested Clothing list for Antarctic Peninsula trip:

2 X light weight thermal long pants
2 X light weight thermal tops with long sleeves
Layer #2
2 X medium thickness thermal track suit type pants

Gloves:
2 X pairs inner thermal light weight gloves (1st layer)

2 X pairs rubber or sealed Gortex gloves or mittens. They must be large
enough to fit over the 1st & 2nd layer of inner gloves. Please note that
snow ski shops think only in terms of snow. Water is much more
invasive!!!
Socks:
3 X pairs light weight thermal
2 X pairs medium thickness thermal
2 X pairs quality thick woollen
Beanies:2 X quality beanies.
Strongly recommended that they cover your ears.
Balaclavas:1 X med weight thermal
1 X heavy weight thermal with full face cover if possiblei.e. only the eyes
exposed.
Eyes:1 X Ski goggles
1 X sun glasses
Feet:Team Mowbray will provide you with a loan pair of sea boots however THERE IS
NO GUARANTEE THEY WILL BE THE CORRECT SIZE
You should strongly consider bringing your own sea boots
Foot protection will be needed for two primary purposes, sailing and going
ashore
Our sea boots are suitable for short walks ashore but are not meant for trekking
or long walks
There are a range of boots available for wet, rough terrain walking.
You should try to have them ankle height to minimise snow, slush or water to
flow over the top of the boot.
You should also bring a pair of sailing type “deck shoes” or joggers and/or “Ugh”
boots/slippers for walking around below decks. The cabin floor will be damp at
times and bare socks will get wet.
Backpack:You will need a day backpack to go ashore with. Your backpack should
big enough to carry a camera, additional clothing, some day food, drinks and any
other personal items etc. We find that a 40 litre pack is about the right size
Normal Clothing:You will need street clothes for before and after your trip. You should bear in
mind that you may well be departing from home experiencing 30 degree summer
days arriving in South America to 10 degrees or less days before leaving on your
trip
Luggage:Please use a soft kit/sailing bag and your backpack to pack your clothes in.
Suitcases are rigid, will not reduce in volume on board.
