Patient Information Sheet
5-Hydroxy Tryptophan and Co-Factors
According to reports in the Scientific Literature, 5HTP and co-factors are basically used for brain chemical imbalance and
neurological type problems. So of these uses are described below.
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan
75mg
Co-Factors …
B1 (thiamine)
B2 (riboflavin)
B6 (pyridoxine 5 phosphate)
Folic acid
Chromium picolinate
Magnesium
Dosage: - 1-2 capsules, 1 hr before bed. Plus 1 capsule – 1 hr before breakfast and lunch - as advised by practitioner.
Sleeping Problems
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan together with cofactors is involved in improving sleep performance, particularly if you have
difficulty in falling asleep, this is the nutrient for you.
Weight Loss – Appetite Suppression
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan and cofactors in their role in helping to improve and regulate the brain chemistry imbalance, works
as an appetite suppressant.
Migraines – Headaches
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan and cofactors may help you in reducing the effects of migraine headaches, particularly after you
have a headache or a migraine headache and you get a drawn out, tired feeling.
Depression
It is very helpful in cases of depression, particularly depression associated with aggression or even suicidal tendency.
Panic Attacks – Anxiety – Stress
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan and cofactors with their ability to normalise brain chemistry imbalance by increasing the availability
of Serotonin, controls panic attacks and stress reactions.
Fibromyalgia – Muscle Pain
The pain inhibiting area in the brain, requires 5 HT and Serotonin. Therefore 5 HT and cofactors are very useful with
fibromyalgia. The chronic pain of the muscles from which many chronic fatigue patients suffer, is often a reflection of a
serotonin lack in their tissues.
Persistent Cough
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan and cofactors are very effective in suppressing excessive coughing. Especially the type of coughing
that occurs after you’ve had the flu and you tend to cough weeks after. 5 hydroxy tryptophan can stop that dead in its tracks.
Stopping Smoking / Alcohol / Amphetamine / Drug Withdrawal
During withdrawal of addictive substances, serotonin levels in the brain plummet, which causes increased pain sensitivity.
5 HTP supplementation maintains serotonin levels during withdrawal. People who are going through drug withdrawal
should be taking this substance – it works quite well. Stops food/ sweet cravings associated when stopping smoking as well.
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan together with its co-factors, improves the levels of Serotonin in the brain. 5 hydroxy tryptophan is
converted to Serotonin, and its cofactors thiamine, riboflavin, activated B6, folic acid, chromium and magnesium are
required for the conversion process.
5 Hydroxy Tryptophan ( 5HT ) can bypasses an often faulty step in the conversion of L Tryptophan to Serotonin. This
means that you require a much lower amount of 5 Hydroxy Tryptophan than if you were taking L Tryptophan. In addition,
L Tryptophan is an S4 (prescription only) supplement – 5 Hydroxy Tryptophan is not.
NOTE: Research in USA in 1999 found that some people, especially those with depression, have low levels of energy
in certain areas of the brain. NAD, Activated B3 helps to boost brain energy through the Krebs or energy cycle.
Therefore if the 5HTP does not act as you would expect, you probably need Act B3–NAD as well as 5HTP for best
results.
Dosage: Take 1 capsule NAD, 2 to 3 times daily
