Mission Statement of Newspapers in Education
As a vital part of The Chronicle and Lafromboise Newspapers, Inc.,
and embracing their values, it is the goal of Newspapers in
Education to encourage and support the use of newspapers in the
classroom as a tool for promoting literacy and as a teaching
resource. Maintaining a quality program that will informly,
involve, and inspire students and teachers is of utmost
importance.
With integrity, Newspapers in Education is devoted to providing a
service to children, education, and the community. The program is
grounded in the belief that use of the newspapers in an essential
element in the formation of citizenship.

educational materials that encourage children and adults to develop basic reading skills

Our NIE mission statement does not include literacy, but I intend to get it changed so that
it does. We have about 1/4 of the citizens who are functionally illiterate in northeast
Georgia and it is extremely important that we join the Literacy Agencies in order to
overcome this deficiency. To me, this should be what NIE is all about.

The St. Joseph News-Press Newspaper In Education program strives to
develop future readers who can use the newspaper to enrich their lives
and participate responsibly in their communities. We promote student
and adult literacy through the use of the newspaper, provide affordable
or funded classroom newspapers and assist teachers in using newspapers
in the classroom, through training and curriculum support.

The Lima News NIE Mission Statement
NIE is an acronym for Newspaper-In-Education, a world-wide effort on the
part of individual local newspapers to aid educators in making the
important transfer of classroom learning to daily life. The Lima News NIE
is a program that uses the daily newspaper in Northwest and West Central
Ohio classrooms as a “living textbook.” Future leaders can view the world
through the newspaper. An educator can use the newspaper to teach almost
any subject to any student on any level and improve their reading and test scores. NIE is a
bridge between the student and their school, community, county, state, nation, continent,
world, and the entire universe.

Program
It is the aspiration of Newspapers in Education to partner with The

I do--it's in the name: the Yakima Herald-Republic's "Newspaper in Education
Literacy and Civics Program"--although I don't have a "mission statement"
... But I always talk about our awful literacy stats here in Yakima County
and counter that with standardized test results from Measuring Success...

The Williamsport Sun-Gazette's Newspaper in Education (NIE) program is

Literacy is essential for the future success of our students and the viability of the
communities we serve. Detroit Newspapers/Newspapers in Education, Inc. (DN/NIE,
Inc.) 501 (c) (3) is dedicated to strengthening literacy and education by providing
educators with classroom newspapers, quality instructional materials and training that
will enrich the curriculum and assist in teaching reading, writing and thinking skills
through use of the newspaper.
