KUF SUPPORTS CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP IN UROLOGY AT DUKE UNIVERSITY
The Kidney & Urology Foundation of America, Inc has awarded a $30,000 fellowship for clinical
research to Dr. Jennifer A. Tash at Duke University’s Department of Urology to study the outcome in
men and women of surgical treatment of urethral injury. The goal of the study is to determine methods of
improving surgical treatments of pelvic injuries in men and women, to reduce the risk of nerve damage,
and/or loss of sensation or post surgical pain. The study is in keeping with the mission of the Foundation
in supporting research that will improve the care and treatment of patients.
FOUNDATION ENGAGES UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA STUDY OF KIDNEY PROTEIN
Dr. John Kyongwon Lee of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of
California, San Francisco, has been awarded a $30,000 research fellowship by the Kidney & Urology
Foundation of America, Inc. Dr. Lee will study the role of a group of specialized proteins, called
aquaporins. In certain kidney diseases, grouped under the name Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidis, the
aquaporins, which allow the passage of water through cell membranes, do not function normally,
resulting in excessive urine formation and dehydration. Dr. Lee will study the atomic structure and
regulation of different aquaporins, including mutated forms found in kidney patients, in hopes of
developing new drug therapies for treatment of this condition. The Foundation is hopeful the study will
foster mew treatments to improve patients’ lives.
