Overview of Outcomes

Review the 3 bullets. Have the participants examine the shaded box. Note how standards
4-6 all involve vocabulary instruction.

Review Tier one and Tier three words. Have the group give examples of both tiers

(Slide 4). Slide 5 (Tier Two Words) is where the common core is suggesting our efforts

examples from their content area.
Review criteria for selecting Tier Two Words. Select vocabulary using these three
guidelines:

1. Words should be taught that are critical to understanding the text.

Students MUST pronounce the word and say it aloud several times – this is essential for
mastery!

5 minutes Refer to Excerpt
In pairs, have the group identify all of the TIER 2 academic words in the passage from
PPT Slides Freedman’s The Voice that Challenged a Nation (slide 7). When done have them compare

their results to the words selected in slide 8.

When we spend time creating the “relatives” for the chosen words we greatly expand our
vocabularies. With a partner, pick another Tier Two word from the passage. Create the
PPT Slides
“relatives” for that word. Share with the group.

Show a portion of this video. It shows how close reading involves multiple reads and the

use of annotation. Pose these questions: What surprised you? What can you do in your

Notes to Facilitator:

Recruit the following:
o time-keeper to help keep session on pace
o table captains to facilitate discussion & take notes
Ask members at meeting to do the following: Add Name OR Content Area to their REFLECTION CARDS &
Collect Responses at the end of meeting.
Recommend: Type responses and categorize participant actions and support needs. POST IN TEACHER’S
LOUNGE and/or AT MAIN GATHERING PLACE as a reminder of objectives
