SAINT OMER /ESCIP School of International Business
A bit of History 
Saint-Omer is a delightful market town situated on the edge of Flanders and
surrounded on three sides by a vast area of farmed marshland. The history of StOmer began 637AD when the monk Omer was sent to evangelize the pagan tribe
who lived in the area. By the 13th century St-Omer had become one of the most
prosperous medieval towns of the region. The town is surrounded by marshlands
which are criss-crossed with a network of intricate waterways. Many areas are only
accessible by boat. During the Second World War, the Nazis built gigantic bunkers
here, designed to launch the terrible V2 rockets on London.
A Spiritual place:
Two cathedrals were constructed in St Omer. Notre Dame cathedral is over 800
years old. This magnificent cathedral was built between the 13th and the 15th
centuries and is recognized as the most beautiful intact Gothic monument north of
Paris. Do not miss the magnificent Rubens and astrological clock. The public
library of Saint-Omer holds, in its rare books section, one of the three French
copies of the Gutenberg Bible, originally from the library of the abbey of St Bertin.
The other 2 Bibles are in Paris.
The College of Saint Omer was established in 1593 by Fr Robert Persons, an
English Jesuit, to educate English Catholics. Former students of the College of
Saint Omer include John Carroll (also known as the founder of Georgetown
University, the oldest Catholic university in the United States), his brother Daniel
(who became one of only five men to sign both the Articles of Confederation and
the Constitution of the United States) and his cousin Charles (who become the only
Catholic signatory of the Declaration of Independence and the first United States
Senator from Maryland)
A Military place:
Situated on the borders of territories frequently disputed by the French, Flemish,
English and Spanish, St Omer long continued to be subject to sieges and military
invasions.
When Saint-Omer became part of France in 1677, Louis XIV dispatched his
famous military engineer Vauban to strengthen the fortifications, with brick
ramparts and wide ditches. A section of the ramparts remains intact on the western
side of the town, converted into a park known as the jardin public (public garden).
During the Second World War, the area was chosen as a launch site for the V-2
rocket. The nearby blockhouse at Éperlecques and underground complex of La
Coupole were built for this purpose and are now open to the public.
An Industrial area:
Saint-Omer is the site of a beer brewery founded in 1866. The brewery is still
located in the streets of old Saint Omer. They produce 600 million 25cl bottles of
beer a year. More than 40% of their output is exported, primarily to the United
Kingdom.
Arques is an industrial town next to Saint-Omer. Its glassworks “Arc
international” was founded in 1825 and is now the world leader in molded
glassware, the region’s largest employer and one of France’s most popular exports
worldwide.

World forum:
The World Forum Lille for a Responsible Economy
Initiated and presided by Philippe Vasseur, former
French Minister, the World Forum Lille is a cycle of
international events in which the objective is to make known the "best
practices" of companies of all sizes who do business in a responsible
way. Spreading these examples and making them contagious is the
objective of this forum organised each year in Lille, France by the Alliances
network.
It has already gathered 14,000 participants in the first 4 events on diversity
(2007), environmental practices (2008), sustainable finance (2009) and the
way to the responsible company (2010). This year, company's executives,
worldwide recognised CSR experts, students, unions and NGOs coming
from all over the world will gather on the 15th, 16th and 17th of
November 2011. From the work done during these four years, the World
Forum Lille launched the Responsible Company Manifesto based on the
sharing of best practices, with a toolbox of 500 examples of best practices.

spectacular example of Gothic architecture
from the Middle Ages. Its history dates back
over a millennium to when churches, abbeys
and monasteries were being built all over
France. The fabric of Notre-Dame-desMiracles has survived 800 years of wars and revolutions.
Please let us know if you are interested in any of those activities.

is one of the most impressive
relics of the Second World
War in Europe. This new
Europe, which has broken
with the confrontations of the past, is now founded on a historical heritage
and humanist values shared by all the people who form it.
The memory of the "dark years" must be preserved for younger generations
by giving them clear, accurate historical information. LA COUPOLE was
