These courses are PREPATORY courses devised to prepare

the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma
The OSSD will be granted by the Ministry of Education and Training,
on the recommendation of the Principal, to a student who has
accumulated a minimum of 30 credits (including at least 18
Compulsory Credits), completed 40 hours of Community Service and
has passed the Ontario Secondary School Literary Test.
Students must successfully complete the following requirements in
order to obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma:
1. Compulsory Credits (18)
o 4 Credits in English (1 credit per grade)
o 1 Credit in French As a Second Language
o 3 Credits in Mathematics (at least 1 credit in Gr. 11 or
12)
o 2 Credits in Science
o 1 Credit in Canadian History
o 1 Credit in Canadian Geography

* A maximum of 2 credits in cooperative education can count as
compulsory credits.
Credit Definition: A credit is defined as “successful completion of a
course for which a minimum of 110 hours of instruction has been
scheduled”. If the student successfully completes a subject, the
equivalent of one period per day, per semester, one credit will be
granted. Credits are assigned based upon attaining at least a pass
mark of 50% or better in each subject.

The courses offered by CIS have been developed according to the
requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training of
Ontario.
The types of courses available in the secondary school programme
are:
College Courses: College preparation courses emphasize concrete
applications of the theoretical material covered in the course, and will
also emphasize the development of critical-thinking and problem-

solving skills. All college preparation courses will be based on
rigorous provincial curriculum expectations and will emphasize the
development of both independent research skills and independent
learning skills.
University Courses: University preparation courses emphasize the
theoretical aspect of the course content but will also include concrete
applications. All university preparation courses will be based on
rigorous provincial curriculum expectations and will emphasize the
development of both independent research skills and independent
learning skills.
University/College Courses: University/college preparation courses
emphasize both theoretical aspects and related concrete
applications of the course content. All university/college preparation
courses will be based on rigorous provincial curriculum expectations
and will emphasize the development of both independent research
skills and independent learning skills.
Open Courses: Open courses in Grade 11 and 12 are appropriate
for all students regardless of post-secondary destination. These
courses are designed to provide students with a broad educational
base and to equip them for active and rewarding participation in
society.

Prerequisite Courses: A course that is deemed absolutely essential
for the successful understanding of a subsequent course.
Prerequisite courses are established only by Ministry curriculum
policy documents. It is advisable that parents and students
familiarize themselves with the system of prerequisites as indicated
for most of the courses offered.
The Ontario Secondary School Diploma is offered in Canada and in
numerous other international schools around the world. Some
courses that satisfy the requirements of the diploma are offered
through online providers.

Course entry
requirements
Students must be at least 17 years of age, have successfully
completed Grade 11 (or the equivalent), and have an academic
mainstream level of English proficiency at a Grade 11 level (or the
equivalent) in order to be eligible for/enter Grade 12. Non-English

speakers may be required to sit an English proficiency test to
determine their level of English Proficiency.
The Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma course is a
yearlong course that begins on 15 August 2011 and concludes on 21
June 2012. The course (grade) is offered full time and takes a total of
10 months to complete.
Classes are scheduled 5 days per week, with the regular school
hours being 8.45 a.m. to 3.15 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Assessment
Information
Internal assessment will comprise of written exams and
projects/assignments.
The Exam Schedule for Grade 12 OSSD for the 2011/2012 school
year are as follows:
Semester 1 – December 13 to 16, 2011
Semester 2 – June 14, 15, 18 and 19, 2012
