Data Entry Bonus Assignment
Due: Friday May 4, 2007
10% Bonus on Lowest Quiz
Purpose
Data entry errors reduce reliability, power, and effect sizes. In some cases, they can introduce
outliers that completely invalidate statistical analyses. Because of this, data entry becomes a
statistical issue. Researchers often use time-consuming data screening procedures to detect and
remove outliers. However, it is more efficient and effective to catch and correct data entry errors
when they occur. The purpose of this assignment is to teach students how to do nearly perfect
data entry, using a double-entry system.
The 10% bonus from this assignment will add directly to your lowest quiz score.
Assignment
1. Go to Dr. Barchard’s website, and download the Data Entry Template.
2. Follow the instructions given in the template to modify the file as necessary to enter the data
on the attached sheets.
3. Enter the attached data from five participants. Enter your first name in the column for
Research Assistant (RA Name). Enter the number from the top right hand corner in the
column for Subject ID Number (ID).
4. Email your completed data entry file to me at barchard@unlv.nevada.edu, along with your
answers to the following questions:
1) What did you like and dislike about the system?
2) Where in the instructions did you get lost or confused?
3) When you were modifying the system for data entry, what problems did you have?
4) When you were using the system for data entry, what problems did you have?
5) How could the system be changed to make it easier to use or more functional?
6) Do you think you would use a system like this for “real” data entry? Why or why not?
