Brothers near Booth Station,was instantly killed Sunday
morning when the car which he was driving left the road and
turned over down an embankment..."
BERRY,Mrs. Daniel F.:"On March 25th,1929, the spirit of...
was called... (She) was born in Elmore County 62 years ago
near Robinson Springs. She was married 42 years ago to
Daniel F. Berry. Surviving her are her husband, five daughters,
four sons, and one brother. The family has resided near
Robinson Springs all of their lives on the old homestead of
Mrs. Berry's father,Thos.Coker..."

BATEMAN,James Martin:"...,diedd Thursday morning of last week.
(He)the son of John W. and Mary Burt Bateman,was born in
Montgomery County December 13th,1857. The family moved to this
section and resided on the D.B. Booth place which they owned
for a number of years... (He) was married Dec.1,1884, to
Miss Maggie Karr. He is survived by his widow and two
brothers,Daniel Bateman,of Prattville, and John W. Bateman
of Wetumpka. He is survived by two sons,Cecil Bateman of
Macon,Ga., and J.W. Bateman of Prattville, and four daughters,
Mrs. W.J. Nunn,of Prattville,Mrs. J.A. Turner,of Tampa,Fla.,
Mrs. W.E. Rawlinson,of Troy,and Mrs. George McNeil of
Montgomery..."
McCULLOUGH,Ead:"On April 23rd,1929, the spirit of... took its
flight from the earth... (He) was a member of the Alpine
Baptist Church... He leaves to mourn his death, his widow
and an adopted son,Andrew, and a brother,W.M. McCullough of
Jones."
MITCHELL,Mr.C.L.:"... died at his home in Prattville early
Tuesday morning. (He) was 38 years old... (He) is survived
by his widow,father and mother,Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Mitchell,
of Autaugaville, and and two brothers,Eugene and Jesse
Mitchell. (The) interment was at Autaugaville..."
REED,Mrs.L.M.:"...,a native of Autauga County,died at the home
of her sister,Mrs. W.H. McGee,of Selma, on April 19th,1929.
(She) was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Parker,..., and
was born on April 27th,1863, at old Milton... The remains
were interred in the family cemetery near the place of her
birth... (She) married N.H. Reed,who died 25 years ago.
Seven children survive,Messrs. Nat,Clurin,Bertram,Paul and
Henry,and Mrs. L.F. Marsh,of Atlanta, and Miss Gladys Reed,
of Selma."

night in Elmore County,on the plantation of Mr. D.L.

Troy Highway about 12 miles beyond Troy Tuesday afternoon..."
BIBB,John:"Friends of Mr.& Mrs. H.A. Bibb and family at Rocky
Mount are grieved to learn of the death of their nephew,...,
of Birmingham. Mr.& Mrs. Bibb and Miss Ella Herbert Bibb
motored to Birmingham Tuesday to attend the funeral."
BARNES,Sara(Mrs.):"Death has claimed ... 83 years of age,mother
of R.P. Barnes,circuit clerk of Autauga County,at her home
in Plantersville Friday afternoon. Funeral services... and
interment was in the cemetery at Plantersville. (She)had been
in failing health for some time. She was a devout member of the
Baptist church and a native of Dallas County. She is survived
by six sons,Ross Barnes,of Prattville, Rev.F.M. Barnes,
Montgomery; Oscar,Albert,Pierce, and C.P. Barnes,all of
Plantersville; one daughter,Mrs. M.T. Campbell,Pantersville."
CRENSHAW,Sallie Bell(Mrs.):"...,sister of Hon.J.B. Bell,of
Prattville,died at Leesburg,Fla.,last Saturday. The remains
were interred at Coleman,Fla. The deceased leaves surviving
her three sons and two daughters..."
HARRIS,E.H.(Mr.):"...,one of Prattville's well known citizens,
died rather suddenly after a few days' illness of pneumonia.
(He) resided in the southeastern part of Prattville....
He died early last Sunday morning. Erastus H. Harris was born
in Coosa County February 29,1860. He moved to Prattville
13 years ago. He first married Miss Mollie Cowart. To this
union there survives one son,Leonard Harris, and two daughters,
Mrs. Pearl Webb,of Deatsville,and Mrs. Sula Hunter of Pratt-
ville. His first wife died in May,1913. About 15 years ago
he married Miss Mollie Thompson. He leaves surviving him his
widow and two daughters by his second marriage,Ruby and Ellie,
and one son,Paul Harris,who are attending school. The deceased
came from a promiment family and was once a school teacher.
The remains were interred in the Chestnut Creek Church cemetery
at Coopers..."

GOLSON,Bama(Mrs.):"After an illness of 7 or 8 weeks,Mrs. Bama
Goldsmith Golson,60,died Sunday morning at the home of her
daughter,Mrs. Florence Golson Bateman,in College Park,Ga.
... interment took place in Wetumpka... Besides the daughter,
Miss Frances Golson,who resides in Wetumpka and is editress
of the Wetumpka Herald,Mrs. Golson is survived by one other
daughter, and three sons,H.H. Golson,of Abbeville,editor
and punlisher of the Abbeville Herald, John F. Golson,of
Sylacauga, and Henry Golson,of Sheffield... Mrs. Golson's
husband,H.H. Golson,was for many years editor of the Wetumpka
Herald. It will be remembered that he met his death when his
automobile plunged over an embankment between Montgomery and
Wetumpka,at night some years ago..."
BURKET,Lynn:"...,13 year old boy of Geneva County,Ala.,was shot
and instantly killed Monday afternoon in a friendly tussle
with Pvt. James E. Ingram of the Elba Company of the Alabama
National Guard..."
MOORE,John Trotwood:"...,archivist of the state of Tennessee,
poet and historian,diead at his home in Nashville Saturday
and was buried ... at Mt. Olivet cemetery..."
Thursday,May 23,1929:
JACKSON,Jack:"... Last Sunday was a sad day to the editor of
The Progress because on that day was buried the last one of
the old time negroes left on his plantation... Jack Jackson,
about 77 to 80 years of age, had been a contract hand of the
Progress editor for 16 years... (He) was laid to rest last
Sunday afternoon in the Spring Hill cemetery south of
Prattville..."

HOWARD,T.W.(Mr.):"...,one of Lowndesboro's aged and prominent
citizens died in that place Friday of last week..."
HESTER,Thomas Henry:"...,of Billingsley died in a Selma
hospital Saturday night after an illness of ten days. (He)
was 73 years of age and was a prominent farmer of the
Independence community. Surviving are the widow,Mrs. Fannie
Hester;two daughters,Mrs. William Wyatt,of Independence,and
Mrs. P.O. Williams,of Billingsley; a son,E.H. Hester,of
Billinsgley;a brother,W.P. Hester of Jones; a nephew, W.C.
Hester of Selma, and a niece,Mrs. J.W. Thomas of Jones.
Funeral services and interment took place at Independence."
DUNWOODY,Samuel M.:...,state commissioner of agriculture and
industries,and former member of the Alabama Legislature,
died at his residence in Montgomery last Sunday afternoon.
Death struck suddenly after he had rallied from the effects
of a heart attack that seized him in Troy about three weeks
ago..."

CALDWELL,Rev.Paul A.(condensed from front page article):
"(He)was the son of Rev. John R. and Rebecca Jennings Caldwell.
He was born in Macon County near Tuskegee on July 6th,1871.
He moved with his father to Autauga County about 48 years ago.
His mother died when he was quite young. His father married the
second time. His stepmother,Mrs. Sara York Caldwell,survives
him... The deceased while a boy joined the Liberty Baptist
Church and was baptized by his father... But the dreaded
Bright's Disease sapped his splendid manhood...And being
confined
to
his
bed
only
a
short
time
last
Thursday
afternoon,May 30th, this most remarkable man passed into
another world... (He) first married Mrs. Leslie Chambliss
in 1890. She died in 1898. One child,Mrs. W.H. Carter,of
Climax,Ga.,survives this marriage. He married the second time
Miss Elizabeth Parker,of Nostasulga,on March 6,1901. She
survived him. He is survived by one brother,John R. Caldwell,
of Thomasville,Ga.,two half-brothers,W.B. Caldwell,of Selma,
and J.T. Caldwell,of Marion Junction; four half sisters,
Mrs. M.L. Johnson,of Greenville,Tex.,Mrs. W.M. Stewart,of
Montgomery;Mrs. A. Youngblood,of Troy, and Mrs. W.R. Youngblood,of Marion Junction..."
LAMAR,C.Vernon:"... died at his residence Wednesday afternoon
and the funeral will be held sometime today upon the
arrival of his son,Jones Lamar,who is motoring from Va.
Interment will be at Mulberry."
CALDEN,Harold:"...58 years of age,who had been employed by a
contractor in Montgomery for the past several months,was
instantly killed and his wife and a daughter were injured
when the car in which they were riding overturned near
Coopers',Ala.,Saturday morning..."

LAMAR,Charles Vernon:"In the death of ... at his residence
four miles southwest of Prattville last Wednesdat afternoon,
June 5th,1929, Autauga County lost one of its best citizens.
(He)was the son of M. Dent and Dora Doster Lamar. He was
born near Prattville May 29th,1865. He was united in marriage
February 25,1892,to Miss Mary E. Jones,of Mulberry... He
leaves surviving him a widow,four sons,Clyde M.,R.Jones,
Ferris and Frank Lamar,and one daughter,Mrs. A.D. Allen. All
reside here except R. Jones Lamar who has just returned from
eight years service with the U.S. Army. The deceased leaves
two brothers,J.D. Lamar,of Ft. Deposit,and Dent Lamar of
Wills Point,Tex., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Frye,of
Mansfield,Tex., and Mrs. Myra Robinson,of Arlington,Tex.
The funeral services wer held at the residence ... and
interment was at the Jones Cemetery ten miles southwest of
Autaugaville..."
THOMPSON,Brantley A.:... In the death of ... at the home of
his daughter,Mrs. Ulmer Johnson,last Friday afternoon,
Prattville and Autauga County have lost an old,prominent
and popular citizen... Brantley Asbury Thompson was born
in Macon,Ga.,September 5th,1848. He was reared in Elmore
County. He joined the Methodist church in 1862. He was
united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Whatley Nov.30,1874.
They moved to Prattville in 1896. Mrs. Thompson died in
August,1920. To this union survive four daughters,Mrs. W.B.
Durden,Mrs. Ulmer Johnson,Mrs. T.A. Thompson,of Prattville,
and Mrs. H.D. Ussery,of Birmingham, and two sons,O.W.
Thompson,of Prattville, and A.A. Thompson,of Memphis,Tenn.,
and quite a number of grandchildren. The funeral services
were held from the residence of his daughter. The interment
was in the Durden Cemetery..."
KELLY,S.A.:"...,prominent Hartselle merchant,was killed when his
car turned over near Hartselle. He is survived by a widow
and three children."
SPENNY,Helen Joyce:"...,two years and ten months old daughter
of Mr.& Mrs. Leo Spenny,of Prattville,died in a Montgomery
hospital Thursday night. The child was taken ill Wednesday
afternoon... Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery."
BATES,James H.:"... He suffered a stroke of paralysis last
Wednesday night and died Friday. Funeral services were
held at Bethesda Baptist Church . Burial at Herman cemetery
at Independence. (He) was a faithful member and senior deacon
at Bethesda Baptist Church... Surviving are his widow,
6 sons,Walter of Pratt City,Hub and Percy,of Cleveland,Oh.,
Fred of Ga.,Auburn of Burnsville, and Clinton of Selma.
Daughters are Mrs. Sidney Scott of Pratt City,Mrs. Bertha
Taylor,of Dayton,Oh.,Mrs. Belma Walker,Mrs. Etta Cox and
Miss Katie Bates of Selma..."

HUNT,infant:"The many friends of Mrs. Luther Hunt of Prattville
were sorry to learn of the death of one of her baby twins."
ATWOOD,Horatio:"...,a well known yellow negro died on the 17th.
He was for a long time a familiar figure on the streets of
Prattville."
METCALF,Guy:"...,32 years of age, a farmer living near Midland
City,Ala.,was decapitated Saturday night when he walked into
the propeller of an airplane..."

GARDNER,Chas.:"Mrs. Irene Stewart was in Birmingham this week
to attend the funeral of her only brother,Chas. Gardner.
(He) died last Sunday night. His home was in Birmingham."
COBURN,Mrs. Grover:"The death of ... occurred at a Montgomery
hospital on last Tuesday afternoon after a long ilness.
(She)before her marriage to Mr. Coburn in 1905 was
Miss Dovie Ophelia Davis. She was born at Vincent,Ala.,on
November 19,1889... (She)is survived by her husband,three sons,
George Robert,John Tyler and Hubert,one granddaughter,
her father and mother,Mr.& Mrs. Vincent Davis,of Vincent,Ala.,
one sister,Mrs. Claude Ingram,of Ragland;seven brothers,
B.H.,S.A. and J.L. Davis,of Birmingham;C.P. and J.R.,Jr.,
of Vincent; and A.M. Davis,of Richton,Miss..."
COOPER,Ida Lou:"... died at her residence near Prattville
Friday afternoon. She is survived by her husband,A.A. Cooper,
of Prattville, one sister,Mrs. Annie Ruff,of Montgomery;
a brother,James Thompson of Atlanta,Ga. The deceased was
buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery..."
Thursday,July 4,1929:
SUMMERLIN,Mary(Mrs.):"...,81 years of age,passed away at the
home of her son,Henry Jacks,in Prattville on Sunday night,
June 23rd. The deceased is survived by nine children,five
sons and four daughters, forty-one grandchildren,45 greatgrandchildren. The remains were interred on the following
Tuesday morning..."
July 11,1929:
HALL,Ben:"...,"Col."a prominent negro and last of the family of
five well known brothers,of Prattville beat,died last Tuesday
and will be buried today at Pink Lily Church. The other
brothers,Will,William,Pete and Henry Hall,died a number of
years ago. These were brothers of Ben Hall,and were well
known and highly esteemed negroes. Will and William were
twin brothers and had nearly the same name."
REYNOLDS,Corrine(Miss):"..., a most highly esteemed lady who
resided about four miles north of Prattville,died last Thursday
night and was buried Friday. (She) was about 70 years of age.
She was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs. James Reynolds,who died
many years ago. She is the last of this prominent family of
sisters and brothers. Their father and mother were pioneers
of this section. She leaves a valuable estate. The interment
was in Oak Hill Cemetery."
NORTON,Mary L.:"... died in Montgomery last Monday. The remains
were brought to Prattville and interred in Oakhill Cemetery.
(She)was Miss McGaugh before her marriage to Charles Norton.
He went to Mexico about 20 years ago for his health and died
there. The deceased leaves surviving her two sisters,
Miss Alma McGaugh,former principal of the Autauga County High
School, and Mrs. Eugene Ballard. The deceased once taught
school in Prattville. She leaves one son."
Thursday,July 18,1929:
BUCKHALTER,Ive:"...,47,farmer,living about five miles west of
Verbena,was fatally injured Monday afternoon when lightning
struck his home. He died about an hour later. Denson Buckhalter,aged 12,received severe injuries to his back while
Lawrence,aged 10, suffered minor burns. Lightning struck the
chimney of the house and was conducted to the back porch
where Buckhalter and his family were sitting."
Thursday,July 25,1929:
BUTLER,Hugh L.:"...,of Montgomery,and for some time an employee
of the Georgia Show Case Co., was killed in an automobile
accident wreck on the Montgomery-Troy Highway near Orion,
early Monday morning..."
HINES,Jesse:"...,three year old son of Mr.& Mrs. L.W. Hines,
died Thursday morning at their home in Deatsville. The remains
were laid to rest in the cemetery at Pine Level..."
LAND,Cabot L.:"...,of Eclectic,who was scalped when he fell into
a saw mill ten miles north of Tallassee Tuesday morning of last
week,died in a Montgomery hospital Thursday morning. The body
was sent to Ecletic for burial..."

TATUM,Ira:"...,a world war veteran,died on Thursday,July 18th,in
a government hospital in Algier,La.,He was buried with military
honors in the Pine Level Church Cemetery. The deceased was
37 years of age. He is survived by his widow,and six children,
Ferman,Nila,Goldie,Frances,Elma,Thelma.
Five
brothers,Lewis,
George,Joseph,Enoch,of Prattville, and Berry,of Ga.,and two
sisters,Mrs. Estelle Ward and Mrs. Jettie Foster,of Montgomery
and his parents,Mr.& Mrs. Thomas Tatum,of beat 10,also
survive."
Thursday,August 8,1929:
BAZZELL,Malinda(Mrs.):"... died at her home near Stony Point on
July 27th. She leaves surviving her a husband,I.B. Bazzell,
four sons,I.E.,M.J.,C.E. and M.D. Bazzell,all of Deatsville,
and four daughters,Mrs. C.W. Helms,Mrs. W.M. Manning,
Mrs. W.R. Roy,of Deatsville, and Mrs. J.C. Garnette of
Wetumpka, and sixteen grandchildren. She also leaves one
brother,H.C. Oates,of Deatsville. The funeral services were
held at Pine Level church and interment in Pine Level
Cemetery..."
GANDY,Frank:"...,the 7 year old son of Mr.& Mrs. J.F. Gandy,
... was carried to a Montgomery hospital and operated on for
appendicitis... Sunday morning death came to him... The
interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery..."
Thursday,August 15,1929:
CARTER,J.N.:"...,50,Billingsley,Ala.,died at Hillman Hospital
on Thursday morning of injuries received an hour earlier
when he was struck by an automobile..."
SMITH,Zac:"...,75,founder and owner of the Zac Smith stationery
store and for 46 years a resident of Birmingham,died at
his home Monday. (He) was born in Prattville,Ala.,the son of
Mr.& Mrs. Joseph A. Smith... (He) married Miss Perle Kouns.
Mr. Smith moved to Birmingham in 1883...(more details on career

Thursday,August 22,1929:
BAZZELL,J.D.:" ...,a 19 year old Prattville young man,was
stricken with typhoid fever several years. He was carried to
a Montgomery hospital and there died on Tuesday night of
last week. His remains were interred in the Liberty Church
cemetery. The deceased was the son of Mark Bazzell."

August 29th. She was buried beside her husband and mother in
the Liberty Church cemetery,better known as Bulger's Mill.
(She) was Miss Emma Durden before her marriage. She was the
daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Deal Durden. Her mother was Miss Mattie
Vinson,sister of Mr. Ike Vinson. The deceased leaves two
daughters and a son ..."

HERROD,Rother:"..., of Magnolia,died in a Selma hospital, on
Friday,Sept.6,after several days illness... Interment was
in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery... He leaves to mourn his loss,
his parents,Mr.& Mrs. Thomas Herrod,four sisters and one
brother..."
CHAVERS,Claude:"While carrying lumber to Autaugaville last
Tuesday morning a truck driven by ... turned over... (He)
was instantly killed. Chavers was about 21 years old and
resided in Autaugaville beat."
CULPEPPER,Clarence:"The Death Angel visited Taylor's Hospital
in Prattville on September 13th,and took... He is survived
by his wife and two little daughters,Louise and Evelyn, his
father and mother,one sister and one brother."
GREEN,Joseph W.:"...,71 years of age,four times representative
of Dallas County in the state legislature,and one of the
oldest engineers on the Southern Railroad,died at his home
in Selma Sunday morning..."
ROGERS,C.I.:...,of Brewton,died Sunday afternoon in a Greenville hospital from injuries received in an automobile
wreck near Ft. Deposit..."
Thursday,September 26,1929:
SIMS,Sallie G.:"... The end (for Sallie G. Sims)came Saturday
September 21,1929. The deceased before her marriage was
Miss Sallie Graham. Her grandparents,Archibald and Euphlia
Graham,were both natives of Argyleshire,Scotland,the latter
born in 1765. They lived some years in North Carolina but in
1818 came to Ala. and settled in Autauga County... He was
called to his final resting place in 1825 and his widow in
1848. Their only son,William Graham, the father of Mrs. S.G.
Sims, was born in Cumberland,N.C.,September 18,1787, and
moved to Ala. with his parents. He was united in marriage
to Sarah Foster,May 29,1822. He was state treasurer from
1847-1860. (He) was a resident of New Philadelphia,which was
on the present site of Montgomery... Mrs. Sallie G. Sims
was born September 15,1835... She was united in marriage to
Leonard Sims,of Lincolnton,Ga.,December 21,1858. There were
three daughters born to this union,Mrs. E.E. Gresham,
Mrs. Daniel Pratt and Mrs. Jannie Sims Young,now deceased.
There are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The deceased united with the Presbyterian Church Nov.12,1852.
The remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery..."
ADAMS,Alex:"There are not many of the old time negroes left...
(He),an old negro of Prattville,was one of the few who
defied time. He was one of the old timers of Prattville...
On Tuesday morning he was struck by the through north bound
M.& O. freight train and instantly killed."
WHETSTONE,Clarence M.:"... (He),a native of Autauagaville beat,
and a brother of Mr. L.M. Whetstone,died on September 16th,
and was buried in California. The deceased married
Miss Astoria Anderson,of Montgomery and is survived by one
daughter..."
October 3,1929:
McCRARY,J.G.(Mrs.):"A pall of gloom was cast over our town...
over the unexpected death of ... last Tuesday morning. The
deceased was Miss Ila Mae Kent before her marriage. She
was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Charles T. Kent,who survive
her. She was born July 20,1886. She was united in marriage
in December,1907, to J.G. McCrary,who survives her. There
survive also two daughters,Misses Lucy and Ernestine, and
one son,Charles,also one brother,Will Kent,of Dallas,Tex.,
and one sister,Mrs. Allie Belle Steinroth,of Montgomery...
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery..."
VORIS,Marie Alice:"On the morning of September 27th the spirit
of Marie Alice,daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Arthur Voris,slipped
away... She was six years old,having been born Jan.7,1923.
... the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Oak Hill
Cemetery."
