ČSA flights cancelled due to strong winds on Thursday – traffic
returning to normal today
Prague, January 19, 2007
Due to the poor weather conditions at Prague Ruzynĕ Airport and at other European
airports, Czech Airlines (ČSA) had to cancel more than twenty of its flights on
Thursday. Most of these were evening or late night flights that were scheduled to
return to Prague early the next day.
The passengers on the cancelled flights had to be rebooked for later departures and
throughout the day today and since the morning, ČSA has been deploying planes with
greater carrying capacities to ensure that the passengers from the cancelled flights can get
to their final destinations as quickly as possible.
ČSA has been able to handle the situation thanks to the commitment of its staff,
especially from the aircraft and passenger handling departments. The weather-related
problems required a flexible deployment of the carrier's airplanes and crews and
perfect coordination between all sections of the company. As a result of these
unusual weather conditions, ČSA incurred additional operating costs, which are
expected to exceed three million Czech crowns.
This morning, Prague airport authority temporarily shut down Terminal North 2 and relocated
all departures and arrivals to Terminal North 1. So far, ČSA has been able to manage the
handling of the increased numbers of passengers. While the morning flights were still
departing with a 30 minute delay, mid-day peak hour traffic was departing on time.
Despite the continuing warnings issued by the weather service and despite the stronger
winds in both Western and Eastern Europe, flight traffic has been operating normally since
last night.
