Recruitment/Hiring of Employees












All approvals to recruit and hire must be
secured prior to contacting the Department
of HRM
Hiring Manager (Business Manager) should
submit electronic Position Description to
HRM for review and classification
Once approved, position should be posted
using the PeopleAdmin on-line system
(Five business days, minimum)
HRM immediately begins to refer qualified
candidates to Hiring Manager
Candidates are interviewed
Hiring Manager updates the interview
status of each applicant
Hiring Manager recommends candidate for
hire and proposed salary is discussed with
HRM
Salary is determined by HRM utilizing pay
band, education, experience, market data,
equity, salary scale, etc.
Once salary is determined, hiring official
extends the offer of employment; pending
successful completion of post-offer
requirements
HRM Employment Consultant coordinates
pre-employment/post-offer requirements
and orientation date with candidate
HRM, as the Registration Authority enters
NETID information into the system. NET ID
is issued at New Employee Orientation.
Hiring Manager submits PEAR form to HRM
to place candidate on payroll.









Position descriptions should
accurately reflect the job duties to
be performed.
Approvals are required from the
Dean’s office prior to classification
of a position and recruitment.
Position descriptions are submitted
electronically to Class and Comp
for approval.
Upon approval of a “PD”, hiring
requisition must be
created/approved for posting.
Human resources should be
contacted when the position is
closed, candidates have been
interviewed, and a candidate is
recommended for hire.
Salary should be approved by HRM
prior to an offer of employment.
Should visa sponsorship be
required, please contact the Office
of International Support Services
at 792-7083 as soon as possible.
Pre-employment requirements
include successful completion of a
criminal background check, on-line
OSHA training, Employee Health
Services (health and drug
screening), and E-Verify.
General Information





Research Specialists may be employed in
Research Grant or FTE positions.
Research Grant positions are “at will” FTE
positions are not.
Salaries of Research Grant positions do not
require State Office of HRM approval.
Salaries for FTE positions at or below the
midpoint of the pay band do not require
State Office of HRM approval.
There should be internal “equity” whether
the person holds an FTE or Research Grant
position.

Postdoctoral Fellow (stipend)
Requirements include a Ph.D. or M.D. Duties

“Appointment” is time limited; typically to last no
more than five years.

Salary is commensurate with experience; based

Fellows should be U.S. Citizens or

Fellows are not MUSC employees. They are
paid by stipend. Fellows may qualify for
MUSC insurance based upon the training
grant.

These are Research Grant positions. Staff
Scientists offer advancement for Postdoctoral
Scholars and Fellows. Candidates in these positions
may apply for tenure or non-tenure track faculty
positions.
