Shut Down Plans for Effingham County Schools

Summer shut down plans

Teachers and Staff

Classrooms, offices, and lounges:

1.

Thermostat control: Set temperature to 80 and make sure the AC is on and Fan is set to Auto on ONE UNIT ONLY. Please make sure that if the unit has damper control the damper is closed. All other units should be set to off.

2.

Red to Blue Temp. Control: Set Temperature on all units to about 10 o’clock on the dial. (If 12 o’clock is straight up you should be to the hot side at about 10.)

3.

Number Temp control: Set to 7

4.

Shut down all computers, Turn off everything that you can think of This means that you should shutdown all Monitors, Printers, Labelers, scanners, and anything else except for the computer processor. (you do not have to unplug your computer components this summer, we will be turning off your classroom receptacles)

5.

Please take home all of your personal belongings, including your “plug-ins” noise generators, radios, etc. remember that your classroom door will be left open during the summer.

6.

If you are in a newly constructed classroom (2007-08) then you can leave your door shut but unlocked. All computer labs should remain locked. ALL OTHER

CLASSROOMS SHOULD LEAVE THEIR DOORS OPEN! Without these doors open the hallways will get no ventilation. This will severely impact the air quality of your hallways.

7.

Clean out ALL refrigerators, and unplug them.

Anything that REQUIRES extended refrigeration over the break should be for instructional purposes. These things should be condensed into one refrigerator/ freezer that will be located in the office area of the school.

This includes all Ice Cream Freezers, Every opportunity should be used to draw down left over ice cream. All refrigerators should be unplugged, unless permission has been given by the school Principal and the Energy Manager.

You will know if you refrigerator has permission because you will be given a signed paper to put on your refrigerator. a.

You will need to clean them out the day before the last day of school. The only thing in them during planning days should be that day’s lunch. At end of the day trash what remains. If you come in to work during the summer please make use of the refrigerator that has been left on for you in the front office. b.

Place towels in the bottom (to catch the melt water) of the Fridge and freezer, and prop them open. You may want to put baking soda in the unit to prevent odor but it should not be necessary if you prop the door open.

8.

The principals will be a given a note from the energy manager to place on

Refrigerators that are needed over the summer. Any refrigerators without this notice placed on the outside will be unplugged without checking contents . This could leave a VERY large mess for you upon your return. I am sorry to be so harsh but too many of these were left on in offices and classrooms last summer.

9.

Turn off all copiers, and Printers. Please unplug any classroom level printers and copiers. You should work off of one copier/ printer for the summer months.

10.

Turn off all lights.

I will be in and out of your schools all summer long to monitor humidity and temperatures.

Thank you for your help in saving our system over 1.2 million dollars.

Why does my classroom have to stay open?

Many of you seemed to have noticed for the first time this winter that our hallways in Effingham County Schools are not heated. This means that these spaces are not air conditioned either. By leaving your classroom doors open you allow me to thoroughly ventilate the hallways as quickly as possible. This means that I will be able to run your AC for shorter time periods to dehumidify the hallways.

Our goal with the energy management program is to keep relative humidity levels below 60%. We will certainly have days over this threshold, however as long as AC is used to push this level down below 60% every 24 hours then no mildew or mold should grow. By shutting your classroom doors I must run the air for considerably more time to properly ventilate the hallway since this air must work its way under the crack of your door.

We will be using the fire doors on the hallways to limit access to classrooms. This process will help the larger units in the common areas to ventilate their areas. Now the system that was designed to cool your commons area will only be cooling your commons area instead of the entire hallway. This will cause the run time on the larger units to decrease dramatically. These few things should add up to considerable savings over our summer shutdown.

Please protect your own personal investments by taking home all of your valuable personal belongings home during the summer break.

Thank you for your cooperation.
