Reiki Standards

Reiki Standards

This statement of standards for Reiki is provided as an interim pending the completion of the UK Reiki Regulation Body’s publication of its national standards which we hope that we can incorporate and follow.

When the CThA sets or agrees standards in any therapy, it is not limited solely to the specific technical, theoretical, spiritual or intuitive nature of the therapy but is broader to encompass the basic underpinning knowledge required by practitioners working in the sector of complementary healthcare. With the increasing opportunities to provide complementary therapies as part of integrated health care, the responsibilities of practitioner organisations to ensure their members are properly equipped and trained to meet the challenges ahead becomes more demanding.

It is in this light the CThA sets out its Standards of Membership of the CThA as a Reiki

Practitioner. Embody (CThA) reserves the right to alter these standards in line with national agreements on standards at any time.

We have used the First Degree, Second Degree, Practitioner and Master Teacher terminology and structure to identify separate stages of training and experience. We accept not everyone will train precisely to this structure and different terminology may be used.

Therefore whilst we agree there may be variations of phrasing and teaching patterns, the basic underlying content, time structures and maximum class sizes are the minimum requirements acceptable to the CThA.

As in every therapy, we hope that all Reiki Master Teachers will provide more in-depth training than the bare minimum standards set out below and will offer their students considerable on-going support.

Stages of Training

1.

Reiki First Degree (Student membership)

2.

Reiki Second Degree (Interim membership)

3.

Reiki Practitioner* (Full membership)

4.

Reiki Master Teacher (Full membership)

*The category of Reiki Practitioner shown above is used by the CThA for internal recognition purposes only and does not imply a wish by the CThA to change traditional Reiki definitions.

Using Approved Master Teachers/Courses

Members contemplating Reiki training are asked to note that only training and certification by a CThA Approved Reiki Master Teachers or on Approved courses/qualifications will be accepted for full membership. Therefore if you wish your future Reiki to be included on your

CThA membership and insurance, please discuss these standards with your prospective

Reiki Master Teacher. (see footnote on last page.) You can obtain advice from the Embody office.

Student membership of the CThA

Our standard conditions of membership and insurance for students are as follows: a) Students must not offer treatments outside of their capabilities, which will be governed by the phase reached in their training programme and their tutor’s assessment. b) Students are restricted to performing practice treatments or case work only, having advised the recipients they are receiving treatments free of charge, as part of the student’s training. c) The Reiki philosophy stipulates an energy exchange as an essential part of the healing process. To comply with our conditions of student insurance, this exchange must not be money or considered as a direct payment for the treatment.

Use of Reiki by members with other qualifications

Registered Practitioner Members of the CThA, already qualified in other therapies, may incorporate their First Degree Reiki into their clinical treatments up to the level of their expertise but they must not claim to be CThA recognised Reiki Practitioners.

R EIKI M ASTER T EACHER

The practitioner’s Reiki Master Teacher will decide when it is appropriate to commence the

Masters’ apprenticeship and this will vary considerably between individuals. However at least two years practitioner experience, coupled with a full apprenticeship, will be the minimum time to achieve the title of Reiki Master Teacher. We anticipate in most cases, the Master Teacher will require a significantly longer period.

Basic requirements:

 Full Practitioner requirements

 Minimum or two years experience as a Reiki Practitioner.

 Complete Master Teacher Apprenticeship with his/her Reiki Master Teacher.

 Hold Professional Indemnity and Public liability Insurance specifically for Teaching

Reiki, which may not be covered by normal practitioner insurance. Please check your policy.

The Embody members’ scheme does cover teaching but not the ‘management of a training establishment’.

 Reiki Master Teacher is a separate grade within the CThA’s membership categories.

 Be a full professional member of Embody CThA .

 To clearly publish conformity to CThA standards for all students.

Note:

The above guidelines do not attempt to set out the detailed training or apprenticeship to progress to Reiki Master Teacher and are limited to basic criteria only.

T HE CT H A R EGISTER OF A PPROVED R EIKI M ASTER T EACHERS

This special register lists those Reiki Master Teachers who are approved to teach students and enable them to qualify as Reiki practitioners (and eventually as teachers).

 Reiki Master Teachers who satisfy all the above requirements.

 Reiki Master Teachers with at least a year’s experience as a Master Teacher but do not possess a suitable teaching qualification are invited to apply, providing they are committed to obtaining such a qualification within a reasonable period of time (e.g. to commence training within approximately six months).

 Reiki Master Teachers who do not possess a suitable teaching qualification but have more than five years teaching experience, are also invited to apply. Full details of teaching experience and references will be required at the time of application.

 There is an annual fee to join the register, which is granted at the discretion of the

CThA.

Those on this register have their names supplied to enquirers as being capable to training them to be practitioners. A special list is available on the website.

Applications to be on this register can be obtained from the web address below or by email or post.

Footnote: We appreciate that many practitioners who have already obtained their Reiki 1 &

2 certificate from a Reiki Master not registered with the CThA, may not be aware of the

CThA’s standards. We acknowledge they received their training in good faith and providing they satisfy all the other requirements for Reiki Practitioner, we will be pleased to offer interim membership in Reiki. They may need to be assessed, at a time convenient to themselves, by a CThA approved Master to enable them to upgrade to full members in Reiki and anticipate they will wish to do this as soon as possible. A fee is payable to the Master.

Interim members may obtain insurance to practice Reiki but are not included on the CThA’s public register.
