Outreach Materials & How to Use Them
Openers to use if People are walking by to get them into our booth
As people approach the table, stand up and engage them in friendly conversation--just
standing or sitting there is not enough. Suitable openers might be,
 “Do you use fluorescent bulbs? Do you know where to recycle them?”
 “Do you have a storm drain on your street? Do you know what is printed on the storm
drain? What’s allowed to go into a storm drain?”
 “Are you interested in volunteering for a beach or creek cleanup?” or “Would you like
a chance to get a free stainless steel water bottle? (if they show up to a site, they have
a chance to get one)
 “Do you change your own motor oil?” “Do you also remember to recycle your oil
filters” (show list of recycle centers)
Stormwater
Watch Out…for Water Pollution
New brochure – hope (fingers crossed) to have by the County Fair. This is the only SMCWPPP
residential brochure specifically dealing with overall stormwater; the problem and solutions. Read
through and memorize some of these “quick facts” to share with people at the booth.

Too Toxic To Trash brochure:
 List of items County HHW accepts from the public by appointment – remind residents
that they can’t throw any of these items out, they must be handled as hazardous waste.
 Items not accepted with solutions: electronics, cell phones, sharps, pharmaceuticals
 Free paint and household products at Redwood City Re-use warehouse: have residents
call for details (time and days)
HHW business card:
 Appointment line and website for online appointments
 Back of the card has Re-Use Warehouse information
HHW Matrix: “Recycle your used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, car batteries, latex paint,
fluorescent lamps, and household batteries”
 Ask resident where they live & show them how to use matrix to find drop-offs
Mercury Brochure:
This brochure has the old logo and website, and old Environmental Health phone number - but
the information printed about mercury is still relevant
 What it mercury? Where is mercury found? What are dangerous to our health? How do
I dispose?
 Use in conjunction with the HHW Matrix for disposal information for lighting.

 How to recycle used oil
 To find a center: 1-800-CLEANUP, www.1800Cleanup.org, and HHW hotline
Used Oil Pen
 1-800-CLEANUP number – residents can get recycling information when they call the
number and put in their zip code; not just for used oil & filter drop-offs.

 For help with pest problem that we do not have a fact sheet on, refer people to the Our

 Give these to people who are taking one of every fact sheet from the rack so that they can
have them in one booklet.
