COMPETITIONS
All Star Dance will be competing in the C.S.T.D. Dance Festival in July, the Penhros Festival
in April and October, and A.D.S. Competitions in June. I would like to encourage all of the
students to have a go whether in a solo, duo, trio or troupe. We at All Star feel that it is very
good experience for students to perform to an audience as it builds confidence and stage
experience.
DATE OF BIRTH – JULY COMPETITIONS IS TAKEN AS OF 31ST DECEMBER 2012
TROUPES – Our main troupe event this year will be the CSTD July Competitions, which run
from Friday 5th July to Sunday 15th July inclusive. All students wanting to participate in
Troupes MUST be available for all of this period. 9yrs and Under and 12years and under
troupes will be on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July so families in these troupes can book to go
on holidays from Monday 9th. All other troupe members cannot leave until Monday 16th July.
We will not be doing troupes in the JUNE Long Weekend Competitions in 2012.
All students 9yrs and above must participate in troupes before they can perform a solo.
If there are insufficient children for troupes of any age group, that age group will not
participate in troupes.

16 Years & Under Troupes – All students must be taking a separate class relevant to
each troupe enrolled in e.g. Jazz Troupe must be enrolled and participating in a Jazz
class. Students cannot just pay for the separate class but not attend. If this occurs their
troupe enrolment will be cancelled.
Open Age Troupes – All students must be taking at least one Jazz class per week to
participate in Open Age Troupes. Students cannot just pay for the separate class but
not attend. If this occurs their troupe enrolment will be cancelled.
All students must participate in their own age group troupes which are available
before they can dance up in age groups for other troupes.
It is now time to make a decision on whether you would like to participate in competitions. I
have chosen a few pieces from the Showcase Dance Championship program that really made
me take a good look at what competitions mean to me as a dance teacher and what they can
mean to young dancer.
“Competition is healthy; but as dance agent Tony Selznick says “It’s healthy only if you selfesteem is not connected to your score and if you’re dancing for the right reasons”. In order to
become a better artist you must always strive to look at the big picture. So, what’s the big
picture? Part of the big picture is to remember that dance is an art form, not a football game.
There are no winners and losers like in a sport or a game. If you think competitions are about
awards and medals then you’re not dancing for the right reasons. So, to dancers and parents
of dancers, this is what you should be taking away from dance competitions instead of just
awards?

All teachers are continuing with yearly rates for competition solos/duos and trios to enable
parents to see upfront what the total cost will be. The cost includes use of your routine for the
duration of 1 year, and unlimited rehearsals (set by the teacher). All routines and costume
designs remain copyright to All Star Dance Studio and are only to be used for competition
purposes unless Michelle gives permission. Rehearsals after the concert for Showcase
Nationals will have a small rehearsal charge. All props used by students for competitions are
the responsibility of the student to organize – Not Michelle.

IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED BY TEACHERS IF THE STUDENTS WITH OLD ROUTINES
COULD CHECK THE DVD AT THE STUDIO BEFORE THEY ARRIVE AT THEIR 1 ST CLASS,
SO THEY ARE NOT WASTING TIME ON REMEMBERING ROUTINES. (THESE DVD’S
CANNOT GO HOME, YOU MUST WATCH THEM AT THE STUDIO.)
STUDENTS LEARNING NEW ROUTINES WOULD BENEFIT FROM BRINGING A VIDEO
RECORDER TO ALL LESSONS.
