Contributions
(a) Academic
Dr.Ashok Jhunjhunwala has made significant contributions to the area of Surface
Acoustic Wave Theory and Applications in the early years of his research career. He has
now expanded his interests also to the areas of Communication Networks, Fibre Optic
Communications, and Optical Signal Processing. While doing his Ph.D. research and in
subsequent years, Dr.Jhunjhunwala proposed a theory on Spectrum of Acoustic Waves
excited by an IDT on a piezoelectric crystal. Later, working with his Ph.D. students, he
has extended the analysis to planar bulk acoustic wave response.
Later, Dr.Jhunjhunwala branched out into the areas of Communication Networks and
Fibre Optic Communications. One of his Ph.D. students investigated the Design of a
High Speed Integrated Packet Switched Network, which represents the type of
technology required in the future packetised voice-data communication network. In the
area of fibre-optic communications, he has shown how voice communication can be
easily added on the widely-deployed Ethernet Network. In the paper on Implementation
Considerations in a Fibre Optic Bus Network, he has discussed the design
considerations involved in fibre-optic bus networks.
In recent years, Dr.Jhunjhunwala has proposed a variant of the Symbolic Substitution
Technique, which could significantly improve the efficiency of its application in Optical
Signal Processing. Further, A Design Tool for Symbolic Substitution has been developed
which enables design of complex Optical Signal Processing systems.
Over the last few years, Dr.Jhunjhunwala and his students have been looking at the use
of enhanced Telecommunications and Signaling to significantly improve the throughput
in a Railway Network. It is believed that on existing track and with training at current
speed, it is possible to enhance the carrying capacity of Railways by a factor of about 5.
A significant piece of work, led by Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, over the last decade, is an
in-depth look at costs and affordability of various components of the Telecommunications
and Internet Network, especially in the context of developing countries. Concluding that
the access part of the network is the key bottleneck in rapid expansion in these
countries, Dr.Jhunjhunwala has focussed his work on examining the appropriate
interfaces between the Access Network and Backbone Network and different options to
build a cost-effective network. His work includes an in-depth look at Wireless Access
Networks and DSL (Digital Subscriber Loop) access networks as well as V5.2 interface
and Internet bypass in the access network.
(b) Administrative Responsibilities / Leadership
At the beginning of his career at IIT Madras, Prof.Jhunjhunwala was Head of Guidance
and Counseling Unit (1983-85) and virtually created this organisation. In 1985 he
became Head of Optical Communication Lab and in 1987 of Telematics Lab in the
Electrical Engineering Department. In late 80’s he took charge of communication
facilities at IIT M and took the lead in providing telephones to all faculty at homes and
offices. For the last six years, he has been the head of TeNeT Group of IIT Madras and
7
has built the group to have nine faculty member, about 120 staff and a number of
associated industries together, the research group’s strength today is 400 and
Dr.Jhunjhunwala provided the overall leadership. From August, 1998, Dr.Jhunjhunwala
heads the department of Electrical Engg. at IIT Madras and has taken an initiative to
make it one of the most cohesive department of the institute.
As a part of Dr. Jhunjhunwala’s administrative responsibilities, he took an initiative with

Analog devices – USA and instituted a chair in the Electrical Engineering
Department of IITM in the name of “Analog Devices Chair” for $140,000.

Mr. Thomas Alexander, IITM alumns in the area of “Telecommunications and
Computer Networking” in the name of “N.T. Alexander” for $1,25,000.
(c) Contributions to Education
Dr.Ashok Jhunjhunwala recognised that the key to strengthening India is imparting of
wide-scale high-quality education to students around the country. Realising the crying
need for demystification and providing a learning tool for fibre-optic communications,
Dr.Jhunjhunwala and his colleagues developed a fibre-optic experimentor, which is now
being used widely in engineering colleges throughout the country and in many colleges
of the world including USA, Singapore and Australia. The product was awarded Best
Product Prize at Elecrama’96 exhibition in Bombay in January 1996. Dr.Jhunjhunwala
participated in the development of a similar educator kit on Digital Modulation
Techniques and more recently that of a Computer Networking Educator. The latter aims
to enable students to learn and implement various networking protocols in a variety of
network topologies. All the three kits are being manufactured commercially today.
Dr.Jhunjhunwala has participated in and organised over the years a number of shortterm courses for industry personnel, and teachers of engineering colleges, in the area of
fibre-optics, wireless communications, computer networking and telematics. Besides
offering such courses in several parts of India, he has also helped organise a couple of
courses in Malaysia and a course in Vietnam under the sponsorship of International
Centre for Science and High Technology (ICST). He played a key role in the formation of
Joint Telematics Group (JTG) of the five IITs and IISC, about 14 years back. This group
has been organising short-term courses every six months in the area of Telematics at
different IITs and IISc, aimed specially at college teachers, but also involving a large
number of industry participants. The group also developed a set of comprehensive video
courses in this area.
Over the last decade, the demand for large-scale engineering education has resulted in
the emergence of a large number of private engineering colleges, especially in South
India. A large number of students are graduating from these colleges especially in the
area of Telecommunication and IT. Unfortunately many of these students, even though
they are bright and hardworking, have not received adequate training because of poorquality teaching and inadequate infrastructure in many of these colleges. Recognising
that the industry badly needs trained personnel, Dr.Jhunjhunwala took the initiative in
establishing Usha Martin Academy of Communication Technologies (UACT), currently
located at IITM. This joint venture between Usha Martin Industries and IITM is a finishing
school to provide intensive training over a thousand engineers every year, on
8
sponsorship from industry. Using Internet based education, the group aims to provide
quality training to a much larger number of young graduates in future. A similar initiative
has been taken up in setting up IITM – Analog Devices DSP Learning Center at IIT
Madras. This center plans to train a large number of engineers in programming on Digital
Signal Processing the engine of today’s telecom systems.
(d) Contributions in building a Telecom Community
Dr.Jhunjhunwala has taken a number of initiatives in tying together the Communications
and Networking community to enhance education and engineering practice. He works
closely with IETE and played a key role in organising its annual Technical convention at
Madras in 1989. He was on the editorial board of Journal of IETE and has also edited
special issues of Journal of Scientific and Industrial Research (January 1995) and
Journal of IETE (upcoming issue on wireless communications). He played a key role in
organising a conference on Telecommunications Technology Alternatives and Policy on
behalf of Indian National Academy of Engineering in 1996 in Delhi and National
Conference on Communications in 1997 at IIT Madras. In March 2000 he envisaged and
organised at Chennai an International Conference “Commsphere 2000 : Affordable
Telecom and IT Solutions for Developing Countries” sponsored by International Radio
Science Union (URSI). This conference brought together a number of scientists and
practising engineers from all over the world.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala is a fellow of INAE, INSA. Indian National Academy of Science, and
Governor of International Council for Computer Communications.
The most successful initiative in networking that Dr.Jhunjhunwala has contributed to, is
the formation of Joint Telematics Group (JTG) of the five IITs and IISc. This group
consists of all telecommunications faculty at the five IITs and IISc and has spearheaded
spread of education in telecommunications and promotion of industry-academic
interaction in the country. Besides organising a short-term course for engineering college
teachers and industry personnel every six months on rotation basis at different IITs and
IIsc, the group also organises National Conference on Communications (NCC) at
different IITs and IISc every year. This is a unique occasion bringing together the best of
academia and industry in India. The group also interacts with various government bodies
and gives its inputs with regards to telecom policies in the country.
Another significant aspect of the community building effort led by Dr.Jhunjhunwala is the
emergence of a group called TeNeT (Telecommunications and Computer Networking
Group) at IIT Madras. The group consists of twelve faculty members at IIT Madras
belonging to both the Electrical Engineering as well as Computer Science and
Engineering department. The faculty in the group works without a hierarchy and is
committed to development of education and telecommunications sector in the country. It
is rare that such a large group works together in academic institutes today.
(e) Contributions in promoting academic-industry interaction
Dr.Jhunjhunwala has made a unique contribution in the area of academic-industry
interaction, especially in the area of Telecom and IT industry. He works very closely with
numerous Indian industries including Crompton Greaves, ITI, ECIL, HTL, Shyam
9
Telecom, HFCL, Usha Martin, BPL, Satyam Infoway, Reliance Telecom, Dishnet, ARM
and Benchmark Systems. He and his group advices these industries in a variety of
aspects including technology trends, Research and Development, product development
and international collaboration. His group has collaborative projects with all these
industries and has brought to the tune of Rs.10 crores of industrial funding at IIT.
Besides, Dr.Jhunjhunwala has been pushing these industries to adapt itself in the postliberalisation era to standup with the very best in the world. Many industry leaders today
look up to Dr.Jhunjhunwala for guidance.
Dr.Jhunjhunwala has also established strong linkages with international industry and
have projects with Analog Devices, USA and Acacia Networks, USA, Siemens, Hp R&D
Labs, USA and in IT Media Labs.
(f) Contributions on Policy matters
Over the last five years, Dr.Jhunjhunwala has put forward a vision that India should have
200 million telephones and Internet connections at the earliest to enable its people on a
large scale. He has examined the bottlenecks and pushed for policy changes that can
make this possible. He works closely with Department of Telecommunications, Ministry
of Information Technology, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and Department of
Science and Technology towards this. He was a committee member for the working
group on “IT for Masses” set up by Ministry of Information Technology and was earlier a
member of various task forces contributing to Vision 2020 document. He is a member of
number of committees at MIT and DST.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala works closely with groups at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM
Lucknow in evolving telecom policies, which would benefit the country. He is a advisory
committee member of “KnowNet-Grin“ (Knowledge Network for Augumenting Grassroots
Innovations) at IIM Ahmedabad and also various institutes like Centre for Telecom Policy
Studies (CTPS), Patriotic & People Oriented Science & Technology, and Center for
Policy Initiatives. He is also an advisor to CII and a number of other organisations.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala has recently taken initiative titled “Sustainable Access in Rural Area
(SARI), which is a joint project involving Jeffery Sach’s “Center for International
Development at Harvard , MIT Media Lab, McKinsey and TeNeT group at IITM. The
project intends to provide Internet Access in every village in two dishnets of India and
build a commercial model which could be replicated to provide Internet to every village in
India.
(g) Incubation Support
Dr. Jhunjhunwala recognised quite early that encouraging students and alumni to
become entrepreneurs, specifically in high technology areas, is a key goal of the IITs. In
the 80s, he helped incubate a company called “Benchmark Systems” formed by some
IITM alumni. From mid-nineties such effort was taken up in a much more focussed
manner and five companies were incubated in the department of Electrical Engineering
at IITM. In 1995 nine students of IIT got together to form “Midas Communication
Technologies Pvt Ltd”, which carried out development of Wireless in Local Loop along
with IIT Madras. A couple of years later, Banyan Networks was incubated with some
10
IITM students to develop Computer Networking products. Similarly AdventNet (Vembu
Systems), Nilgiri Networks, NMS works, Chennai Kavigal and n-Logue were started with
the help of TeNeT group – all focussed on providing telecom and Internet in India.
Today, Dr.Ashok Jhunjhunwala is working to set up an R&D park in vicinity of IITM in the
model of Stanford Research Labs.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala is closely working with several Venture Capital Funds to promote R &
D and entrepreneurship in India, with a belief that India could become a Design house
for the world. He has also taken an initiative to set up a R&D Park associated with IIT
Madras with the support of IITM alumni.
(h) Development Initiatives
As a natural outflow of his research interest in the area of communication systems and
computer networks, Dr.Jhunjhunwala has built one of the finest groups called
Telecommunications and Computer Networks (TeNeT) in the country developing fullfledged products for the Indian as well as International markets. Over the last few years,
the system development efforts in his laboratory have snowballed, resulting in major
technology developments. Currently he works with eight other faculty members and 400
engineers and technicians, developing low-cost telecom and network products for India
and other developing countries. They have developed corDECT Wireless in Local Loop,
which provides 35/70 Kbps Internet and simultaneous voice conversation at a cost much
lower than that of any other WLL product. Digital Internet Access Switches (DIAS) is a
DSL on copper product providing 144 Kbps or 2 Mbps Internet plus simultaneous voice.
optiMA Fibre in the Loop system provides SDH fibre back-haul and lowest cost
telephony. The CygNet Network Management System enables management of telecom
as well as Internet network using a tiered approach. The products have been developed
in partnership with companies like Midas Communications, Banyan Networks, Nilgiri
Networks and Vembu Systems. These companies were formed by alumnus of IITM and
incubated in TeNeT Lab at IITM.
Dr.Jhunjhunwala today is leading a movement to make India a premier design house for
telecom and IT products with his vision to enable India to have 200 million telecom and
Internet connections in India. He has helped IIT incubate a number of Telecom and IT
companies. He has led the development of products, which are amongst the best in the
world and specially suitable for developing countries. He has contributed at policy level
to enable India to expand its telecom network. He has worked with the key telecom and
network Industry leaders in putting forward a vision that developing countries need
lower-cost affordable technologies. He has worked to take telecom and Internet to small
towns and rural areas in India. The Wireless Local Loop system developed in his lab
today is being deployed in Argentina, Brazil, Tunisia, Madagascar, Kenya, Angola,
Nigeria, Yemen, Fiji and Iran besides India.
(i) Advanced Research
One of the key beliefs of the TeNeT group is that all the latest technological
developments worldwide have to be brought to bear on its mission of enhancing telecom
and Internet in India. While systems developed abroad for a different market may have
only limited application in India, the technologies incorporated in them, with appropriate
11
re-design, give rise to systems that are more affordable and better suited to our
requirements. It is therefore imperative for the TeNeT group to be at the forefront of
research in wireless and optical technologies, system design and ASIC development,
communication protocols, audio, video and image processing, and international
standardisation efforts.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala has encouraged the faculty of the TeNeT group, along with the
research scholars they guide, to be active in the all the areas mentioned above. Many of
the research scholars also work part-time on product development. There is thus much
two-way flow between these two important streams of activity in the TeNeT group.
TeNeT faculty and their students routinely publish in international journals, present their
work in conferences, and give tutorials on the latest technological developments. A
number of leading companies have sought to establish laboratories at IITM to work with
the TeNeT group. Among these are Intel, HP, TI, and Cisco. A Centre for Intelligent
Optical Networks, (CION) set up with support from Sycamore Networks and its founder
and IITM alumnus Dr. Deshpande, is fast coming up. MIT Media Lab works closely with
the TeNeT group today, and plans to set up a Media Lab Asia Centre at Chennai with
affiliation to the TeNeT Group.
Recently, TeNeT faculties have teamed up with their colleagues from other institutions
and from industry to form a forum for developing the next-generation wireless technology
in India. The aim is to move forward from merely following international standards, to
driving them and creating Indian-owned essential IPR. This is the logical next step in the
evolution of IT technology development in India.
The dream of Dr. Jhunjhunwala and TeNeT group is to not only see a couple of hundred
million telephone and Internet connections in India, but also to make India a technology
leader in research, product development, and services in the IT field. The group believes
that with its focussed approach built on teamwork, and by uniting with the efforts all
those who are striving towards this goal, this dream will soon become a reality.
(J) Contribution to Society
Dr.Jhunjhunwala has been active for a number of years in organisations like Patriotic
and People Oriented Science and Technology (PPST) group, Centre for Policy Studies,
Centre for Science and Environment, Centre for Indian Knowledge System and LokSwasthya Parampara Samvardhan Samiti (LSPSS).
The current mission that Dr.Ashok Jhunjhunwala leads is to enable every village of India
to have telecom and Internet connections. Recognising that Internet is power,
Dr.Jhunjhunwala and his colleagues have helped formation of the operators company nLogue Communications Pvt. Ltd., focussed on providing telephone and Internet in every
village. The work to provide such connections is going in Madurai and Cuddalore District
of Tamil Nadu, Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, Bagru in Rajasthan and Sangarur
district in Punjab. The objective is to provide 1 million connections in Indian small towns
and rural areas in the next three to three and a half years.
