Ongoing
150 minute literacy block training begins.
District/School Bannerman Learning Center
Events
Faculty members will write a lone paragraph Public Service Announcement
about a favorite book. They will be read during the morning announcements
on 1/8-1/10. Students will right their PSA during English class. Five will be
selected to be read during morning announcements on 1/13-1/17. Winning
students will get ice cream for lunch.
Charles E. Bennett Elementary
Book Commercials – Students or classrooms will create commercials
advertising their favorite book. Commercials will be shown during the
announcements.
Classes will decorate classroom doors to share their favorite books – judging
Thursday after school – winners announced Friday.
Clay Hill Elementary
Morning News will spotlight a book series/author; Door Decorating contest
to be completed by Thursday-THEME: Reading Accelerates Success!
Clay High School
We are holding monthly meetings of the Faculty/Student Book Club where
we’re reading the Florida Teens Read novels.
Fleming Island High
Childcare classes implement phonemic awareness activities, as well as early
literacy strategies
Media Center runs Book Recommendations on their TV screens
Our school focuses on infusing literacy strategies across content areas on a
daily basis
Grove Park Elementary
Get Caught Reading---Students will be given tickets when they are caught
reading. They will write their name on the tickets and turn them in at lunch.
The tickets will be drawn each afternoon for prizes and winners will be
announced over the intercom.
Keystone Heights Elementary
Just completed a month long program entitled Unplug. Literacy and Physical
Education Activities for Parents and Kids to share together.
Students will draw and display either the main character, setting, or main
idea of the book read over the intercom on Monday. Drawings will be
displayed in the hallways or on classroom doors.
Keystone Heights Junior/Senior High
Book Drive (All week) Students will bring in gently used books to be dropped
into collection boxes during TTR. These books will then be donated to local
group (Sapp/Morford) and distributed to local families who do not have
access or ability to get to public library.
READ Poster contest (All Week) – Students will have until Friday morning to
design/create a poster around the literacy week theme of “Reading
Accelerates Success”. These posters will be submitted to the student’s
language arts teacher when completed. All posters will then be judged and a
winner announced at the end of the day. Posters will then be displayed
around campus the following week. (If students need poster board they can
see Mrs. smith)
Open the Door to Reading – During TTR, classes that wish to participate will
decorate their classroom doors (for portables inside of door and for
interior hallways outside of doors can be decorated)to promote reading, and
should have a theme connected to “reading accelerates success in careers”
Word of the Day – With the help of our TPTV crew, student will watch a
short video clip on the morning news each morning that features “The Word
of the Day”
Eat Up Reading – Guests and/or faculty, community members, will be asked
to read short “motivating” literary pieces during lunches throughout the
week.
Yearbook – Will be taking pictures all week of the planned activities, to add
to “Literacy Week” section in our school yearbook.
Lakeside Elementary
“Get Caught Reading” Students who are “caught” receive a ticket that goes
into a “fish bowl”. Names are drawn and prizes are given in each class
weekly. (This is a whole year activity.)
Math classes will make a plan to guess the number of books in the library.
The winning class from each grade level will win a prize.

Students will explore the Florida Electronic Library through grade
appropriate activities to guide them through an interactive research project
within their classrooms. Students will continue to explore this resource as
they visit the library during their resource time.
Parents will receive information and web address so they too are familiar
with this resource.

(K-1) We will be planning a week long theme of snowmen. On Monday, we will
rotate all classes through each classroom to hear a different snowman story
and do a short activity with the book. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday, each book will be covered more in depth within our own classroom.
(4th) We are going to have a “read in” with a “sixties” theme. The students
can bring a pillow to read on the floor, and may dress up.
The rest of the week, we will add a ten minute silent reading period to the
end of our blocks, so the students are reading 10 extra minutes a day.

outline the benefits and use.
The Florida Times Union will be donating newspapers to each classroom.
Students will explore the world of news print through hands-on activities to
teach students how newspapers are organized, the various articles, and
how to navigate through the different sections.
Parents will receive information about the Florida Times Union and ways to
receive the paper at home or via the internet.

Guest readers from the community will be coming to school to read to
classes.
Students dress as leaders – wear your best clothes and dress to impress.

BOOK BUFFET DAY – an author will be chosen by for each grade level to
conduct an author study with books by the author available for the grade to
read throughout the day either utilizing the Progressive Reading model or
through individual classes. The grade level will provide the favorite snack of
the author for each student to try during the author study.
A Parent/Student Book Buffet night may be scheduled for 6:30 pm this
evening. More information to follow if determined by faculty.

some books for students to choose to present to the other third grade
classes. They can work in small groups and will present a book (book report
style) to the other students. They can make a poster (advertisement) or
brochure to go with it and dress up like one of the characters (just while

Hats on to Reading” – Students will pay one dollar in order to be able to wear
their hat for the entire day (including within buildings and classrooms) to
promote reading. Students will be given a ticket during first period when
they pay and the ticket must be adhered and visible on the hat for the
ENTIRE day, with their name written on the ticket. If the ticket is
misplaced/lost, then the student will need to pay or again or forfeit the
ability to wear the hat for the remainder of the day.

4th Period Door Decorating Contest – judged today. The theme for this
year’s contest is NEW… “Reading Accelerates Success.” The purpose of the
theme is to integrate all content areas into the quest for greater success in
literacy across our state. Based on the new theme, the Just Read, Florida!
Office has partnered with the NASA Kennedy Space Center in an effort to
encourage students to shoot for the stars as they take on more challenging
and complex text and strive to be successful readers.

 Grade levels are on their own to celebrate reading as a team.

“Show your Indian Pride as a Reader” – Students will be asked to dress in
school spirit – wearing school t-shirts, colors, etc similar to the attire they
would choose for pep rallies.
Then during the evening (times TBD 6pm?) KHHS will hold its annual Junior
High Book Bash. This event is for all 7th or 8th grade students that can
attend. All the activities the student participates in are game based
literacy activities. The students purchase a ticket to enter that night – that
ticket includes all games, dinner, popcorn and candy and soda. The activities
are completed in “literacy station” form and as each student visits an
activity they receive a ticket, or if they win they receive tickets, and these
are dropped into boxes for prizes for a “random drawing of names” for
prizes at the end of the night. This year we will be having: book mark
making, book walk, book check out, apples to apples, vocab. Bingo,
Scattergories, Pictionary, and Read Aloud in the Dark. Each student that
attends also receives a brand new book of their choice to take home.
