Purpose
This unit standard is for people working, or who intend to work, in the
surveying profession as a survey technician.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for a
topographical survey; perform a topographical survey; process field
observations from the topographical survey; and develop and present a
topographical plan.

Definitions
Job requirements take account of site conditions to meet contract specifications, and
accord with procedures and work instructions written in quality manuals.
Workplace procedures refer to documented procedures specific to an enterprise
which set out the quality management requirements for the business practice and
activities of that enterprise.

Element 1
Prepare for a topographical survey.
Performance criteria
1.1
Job requirements are determined in accordance with workplace procedures.

requirements include – spot levels, contours, physical features,
buried services, boundaries.

Survey methods and equipment are selected in accordance with job and
accuracy requirements.
1.3
The plan scale, contour interval, and level of detail are identified in accordance
with job requirements.
1.4
Feature coding is chosen to suit the task within software capabilities in
accordance with workplace procedures.
Element 2
Perform a topographical survey.
Performance criteria
2.1
Features, breaklines, strings, and ground heights are surveyed in accordance
with job requirements.
2.2
Spot height density is surveyed to accurately reflect ground topography in
accordance with job requirements.
Element 3
Process field observations from the topographical survey.
Performance criteria
3.1
Field data are reduced in accordance with triangulated irregular network
software instructions.

Analysis of the triangulated irregular network eliminates errors and omissions
from the data in accordance with software instructions.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
