Intellectual Property Considerations for Submission to the Poster Celebration
Abstract receipt deadline: March 21, 2014
The 8th Annual Research Fellows Poster Celebration, to be held on May 28, 2014, is a public
event. As such, participants need to consider whether their submissions will disclose inventions
or ideas that might have commercial application.
Please read the following information carefully to determine whether your abstract/poster
submission needs discussion with the Partners Research Ventures and Licensing Office. Failure
to adequately protect your ideas prior to Poster Day may lead to the loss of license/patent
opportunities. Both the corresponding author and the laboratory Principal Investigator should
carefully read and consider the information below and contact the Research Ventures and
Licensing Office, if needed.
1. Do you believe that your proposed presentation will disclose an invention(s) that has
commercial application and will improve patient care? Examples of an invention(s) can
include the following:
a. new device, e.g., microfluidic chip, cell sorter, substratum for growing cells;
b. new therapeutic, e.g., small molecule or biologic;
c. new diagnostic, e.g., inorganic/organic based diagnostic;
d. new delivery-vehicles for a therapeutic/diagnostic;
e. new methods, e.g., therapeutic/diagnostic/research/manufacturing;
f. an improvement(s) to an existing device;
g. an improvement(s) to an existing therapeutic;
h. an improvement(s) to an existing diagnostic;
i. an improvement(s) to an existing delivery-vehicle
j. an improvement to an existing method.
2. If yes to #1, has the invention(s) been previously disclosed/presented to others outside of
MGH in a non-confidential manner?
3. If yes to #2, and that disclosure was more than a year ago then you may proceed with the
proposed presentation.
4. If no to #2, or if the previous disclosure was less than a year ago, then we recommend that
you discuss the proposed presentation with your advisor and/or mentor and your point person
at Research and Licensing of Research, Ventures & Licensing (RVL).
To find your point person, please refer to the following website:
