Short description of what the grant would be used for.
To install 100m x 2m floating reed bed islands around the conservation areas of
Stanley Park Lake. Floating reed beds are suspected islands, made from perforated
PVC with coir topping and are held down by wire mesh. They help to:
-
Improve biodiversity
Improved water quality by reducing pollutants, phosphorus and algae
Define and secure the lakes eastern conservation area (designated County
Biological Heritage Site).
Improve the aesthetic quality of the lake
The reed beds islands will also be planted with a variety of other aquatic plant
species, including water mint, sweet red grass, purple loosestrife, marsh marigold
and reed. These colourful and varying plants will attract a host of new guests
including bees, butterflies as well as providing a feeding ground for a range of birds,
fish and bats.
The root balls that grow from these plants will provide an ideal habitat and breeding
ground for zooplankton – tiny invertebrate animals that live within the water and
feed off the more damaging phytoplankton. Zooplankton will be key in reducing the
effects of phosphorus. Young fish, including perch and roach, will also find
safe havens in the dense roots to breed and live.
