This month we will be celebrating Pentecost, or Whit Sunday, one of
the major festivals of the Christian year. Pentecost was originally a
Jewish festival which took place 50 days after Passover and
celebrated the beginning of the wheat harvest. The Acts of the
Apostles tells us what happened when the Holy Spirit came down on
Jesus’ disciples gathered in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost,
empowering them to spread the good news about Jesus to the
crowd of people in the city for the festival. As a result about 3000
new converts were added to the group of believers in a single day.
Pentecost has been described as the birthday of the Church. The
Gospel message went viral as the new believers returned to their
own countries. We can read in Acts about the adventures of Peter,
John and Philip as they spread the message, followed by Paul after
his conversion and his fellow workers Barnabas, Silas and Timothy.
These missionaries didn’t always have a good reception, and some
of them were imprisoned for preaching the faith. Acts ends with Paul
under house arrest in Rome from where he wrote many of his letters
to the Christian communities.
As we prepare to celebrate Pentecost we remember Christians who
are persecuted for their faith in some countries in the world today.
Let us be thankful for the religious freedom we enjoy and make the
most of the opportunities we have to share the good news about
Jesus in word and deed in the power of the Holy Spirit.
