85 REARING CALVES
10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin & Ben Baggott
Overall Average £164.02
An excellent entry and a very pleasing trade particularly in consideration of
the weather and many farmer buyers not in attendance.
Friesian (5): only a small number forward but very interesting to see these
calves selling much better and even the plain types well worth selling. Higher
numbers forward could cause this to deteriorate, but medium and best Friesian
types matching if not bettering export prices, the plain and 3rd quality calves
have also doubled and more should attempt to market these again. J
Millards’s Friesian topped at £150, Messrs B Gough made £100 of a good
British Friesian calf, medium types traded £45-60, plain calves £20-£30.
Hereford/Angus (29): Superb entry and a marvellous trade with plenty of
medium quality types forward. Best Hereford £172 for D J Hibbard, 2nd and
3rd quality bulls £130-£160. No very best on offer. Angus bulls a flying
trade. G A J Hale, Newent were rewarded for travelling through Gloucester
topping at £235. M Windels bull made £172 and £200, £200 and £195 for J
Millard. Smallest types £105-£115. Hereford heifers for type, as dear as seen
for some time. Medium quality heifers £90-£130 with better sorts £140-£150
for M/s Butler. Angus heifers saw 1st quality top at £178 and £170 for L
Lewis, £120 for G A J Hale.
Simmental (23): Good entry strong trade, very best just £5-£10 easier but
mediums well sold. £270 top for B L & A L Bowen, £265 for M/s Harrow
and M/s Bowen. Best all £240+, medium types traded £170 -£200, small and
plainer bulls £10/£20 dearer at £130-£170. Best Simmental heifers a flyer,
top £225 from Lodge Farm, Best £175+, mediums £140-£155, some smaller
heifers £110-£130 looked a very good trade for their size.
Limousin/Blonde (9): Small quality entry. £260 top for J W & S Cooke,
£255 for G A J Hale. Blonde medium quality to £160. Best Limousin heifers
to £182 for L Lewis. Small Blondes £110-£120.
Blue (11): Topping the day were Jamie Taylor’s bull’s at £288 and £265.
£220 and £210 for L Lewis, Best £200+, heifers topped at £210 for P C & R
Jenner. £205 and £200 for R J D Taylor, mediums £160 - £170.
A few weaned calves sold well 2 months Friesian £98, a Blue bull 3 months
made £342. Angus 2 months to £192 all from R A Pullin.

11.30 am - Auctioneer: Arthur White & Chris Voyce
A very good entry for mid July sold to slightly improved trade, especially on
the leaner and stronger cattle. Due to haymaking weather there were less
farmers in market making some of the younger cattle more difficult to sell.
