THANKS BE TO GOD! OUR PARISH GROWS YET AGAIN
Nicholas Scott, born to Tania and Chris Scott, was baptized on June 14.
Luka Usov, born to Olga and Vladimir Usov, was baptized on May 22.
Melissa (Melitsa) Waldon was baptized on Sunday, July 26. She is the
fiancée of Eugene Fitzpatrick. Their wedding is planned for early January.
The baptism of Vincent Gregory Parella, born on May 25 to Olga and Al
Parella, is anticipated for August 30 with a luncheon on September 6.
James Morrill was received into Holy Orthodoxy on Sunday, August 9 by
Chrismation. Members of his family, among them his wife, Michelle, and
their children, and his parents, were in attendance.
CONGRATULATIONS
Great Grandma Nina Fedorov, Grandma Maria Hauf, Aunt Tasia Fedorov,
and Aunt Christina DiLello, were in Ann Arbor, Michigan on August 8 for
the baptism of Isabella, born June 11to Marcus Hauf and Anya Makovic.
MIGHT YOU BE INTERESTED IN ORDERING A FRESCO?
Tasia Fedorov asks any of our parishioners who contemplate doing so to
contact her as soon as possible (459-1253 or Tasbf@aol.com). We plan
to send an appeal to others via the website of our diocese, but we want
to be sure that members of our own church family have first choice.
KEEPING IT BUTTONED
You wouldn’t come to church with your shirt unbuttoned, would you? So
it is that a parishioner asked your editor to remind us all to keep our lips
buttoned. Any of us might violate the reverential atmosphere of the
liturgy, particularly near the end. Let us humbly help one another to
attend to this vital consideration. Your fellow Orthodox Christians will be
grateful, and you yourself will reap a silent reward.

HELPFUL NUTRITIONAL RESEARCH
Jean Henry shares this information she found to be sure her family eats
right during fasting times. Protein sources: any types of nuts, nut butters,
any types of beans, soy products. Calcium sources (recommended daily
dose=1,000 mg): blackstrap molasses (2 TB=400 mg), collard greens (1
cup=357 mg), tofu (4 oz.=300 mg) [made with calcium sulfate], calcium
fortified orange juice (8 oz.=300 mg), soy or rice milk (8 oz.=300mg), soy
yogurt (6 oz.=250 mg), turnip greens (1 cup=249 mg), tempeh (1 cup=215
mg), tahini [or any sesame seeds] 92 TB=128 mg), almonds (2 TB=86 mg).
FYI: Limit soy products to growing boys—(a source of estrogen; broccoli,
spinach, rhubarb, Swiss chard, and beet greens are not significant sources
of calcium; ¾ cup of collard greens have more calcium than a cup of
cow’s milk; blackstrap molasses is the only food that contains all of the B
vitamins. In some cultures they give a spoonful daily to the children!
IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE SISTERHOOD: It’s that time again!
Parish Feastday By now everyone must be aware that we will celebrate
our parish feastday on Sunday, September 20 with Bishop Jerome serving.
A luncheon will be served after the Divine Liturgy. RaeLynn (Anastasia)
Gonyea is in charge of the luncheon. She has asked anyone able to help
set up on Saturday evening, September 19, and/or to help in the kitchen
on Sunday morning and clean up after the luncheon to give her a call at
695-6865 or e-mail her at rgonyea4@nycap.rr.com. The more helping
hands, the better! Also, please be aware that you will receive a phone
call regarding a dessert that you might want to bring to the luncheon.
Taste of Russia The next event being sponsored by the Sisterhood will
be our annual Taste of Russia and ethnic food sale scheduled for
Saturday, November 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is our biggest
event of the year, and the committee is working hard to make it another
successful one. Once again parishioners will be called in September for a
few hours of help during the event. Helpers will be needed in the kitchen
for food preparation, for staffing the various tables, and for other tasks.
Please be generous with your time when you receive that phone call. As
in years previous, the baked goods table will feature goodies baked or
made by our own parishioners; but more about that in a future newsletter.
An important part of the Taste of Russia is the preparation of frozen
foods for sale at the event. Below are the dates when we will be making
vareniki and golubtsy, and when Margo needs help making sauerkraut.
Vareniki:
September 8, 15, 22, 29, and October 6—all Tuesdays.
Golubtsy:
Monday, October 19—all day or preparation;
Tuesday, October 20—all day for making and baking;
Thursday, October 22—in the evening for packaging.
Sauerkraut: Monday, October 26—a few hours.
If you can help on any of these days, please phone Margo at 371-7758.
Next Sisterhood Meeting: Sunday, October 4
Thoughts about vain things are sicknesses of an idle and sluggish soul. We
must, then, as Scripture enjoins, guard our intellect diligently (cf. Proverbs
4:23), chanting undistractedly and with understanding, and praying with a
pure intellect. God wants us to show our zeal from Him first by our
outward asceticism, and then by our love and unceasing prayer; and He
provides the path of salvation.
