The Saeima1 has adopted
and the President has proclaimed the following Law:
On Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species
of Wild Fauna and Flora, 1973
Section 1. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
Flora (hereinafter – Convention) and its Appendices I, II and III, signed at Washington, D.C.,
on 3 March 1973, is accepted and ratified by this Law.
Section 2. The Law shall come into force from the date of its proclamation. The Convention
and its Appendices shall be proclaimed in English with their translation into Latvian
concurrently with the Law.
Section 3. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development shall
perform the functions of a coordinator and the Management Authority referred to in Article
IX of the Convention for the purposes of implementation of this Convention.
Section 4. The Convention and its Appendices shall come into force within the time period
and in accordance with the procedures laid down in Article XXII thereof, and the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs shall notify thereof in the newspaper Latvijas Vēstnesis [the official Gazette
of the Government of the Republic of Latvia].
The Law has been adopted by the Saeima on 17 December 1996.
