A Lesson For Life
By Medard Laz
Years ago , there was a boy in my class called Colin. He worw old fashioned clothes
and thick glasses. My friends and I thought he was a nerd and we laughed at him. He
was always the last picked up to play basketball or football. We often played tricks
on him.
One day he sat near me in a gym class. Someone pushed him and he fell on top of
me. The kid who pushed him said Colin did it. With the whole class watching, I had to
choose – do I ignore or do I start a fight with Colin? I chose to fight. I couldn't let the
other boys think I was scared.
I shouted, " C'mon , Colin , let's fight!" He said he didn't want to, but like me , he was
worried what the other boys would think. So we fought. I hit him hard in the face
and the class went wild. Just then , the gym teacher walked into the room . He was
that we were fighting and sent us to running track.
He followed us to the track with a smile on his face and said," I want you two guys to
go out there and run around the track holding each other's hands." The whole class
laughed loudly. The two of us felt stupid but we had no choice – we went out to the
track and ran hand-in-hand.
While we were running , I looked at him, with blood on his nose and thick glasses.
Then we both began to laugh. Going around the track hand-in-hand made me see
Colin in a different way. I no longer saw him as a nerd . I understood that he was a
person, just like me. It was amazing what I learned when I was forced to go hand-inhand with someone for only one mile. It was a good lesson. Since then , I have never
hit another person.
