I'm sure some of you have already heard, but, for those who haven't heard, the
Louisville mayor signed the anti-pet ordinance yesterday. To say we are
devastated is an understatement. However, we haven't given up yet. We may
have lost this battle, but the war is far from over. Several lawsuits are
being filed and the local media are openly opposing the signing of this
ordinance by the mayor.
A lot of the comments on e-lists at the moment are whether or not to support
the Kentuckiana Cluster. Please don't stay away. There are better ways to
protest.
In that regard, I'd like to make a suggestion that will impact Louisville
economy while supporting the Louisville Kennel Club (the very ones who are
financing the fight against this ordinance). Since the KY Fairgrounds is
not under Louisville jurisdiction (and therefore not subject to the
ordinance), why not enter the shows but stay in a hotel/motel just outside
Jefferson county. (There are several very nice hotels/motels outside
Jefferson County within easy driving distance from the fairgrounds with
plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby.) Buy gas, food, etc outside
Jefferson county. Shop outside Jefferson county, etc. Keep a record of
the total monies that would have been spent in Louisville. After you return
home, send a letter or email to the metro council and the mayor stating why
you did not stay in Louisville and how much money was lost to them as a
result. (I'll be happy to supply email addresses of the metro council
members and mayor.)
If you would like to take it a step further, and make an even bigger impact,
contact the Louisville area businesses you would have visited (i.e.
hotel/motel, restaurants, stores, etc) and tell them how much you spent
outside Louisville and why you did not spend your money at their
establishments. I doubt they will be very happy that the metro council
members and the mayor cost them part of their livelihood.
If enough people are willing to follow the above suggestions, it just might
make a difference.
