LITERAL MEANING

NON-LITERAL MEANING
TYPE 1 (There is NO OBJECT.)
- TAKE OFF – The plane took off in spite of the fog.
TYPE 2 (The position of STH/SB tells you the OBJECT CAN CHANGE POSITION.)
- TURN STH ON – He turned the lights on. He turned on the lights.
If the object is a pronoun, it must come before the particle. – Turn them on. Turn on them.
TYPE 3 (The position of STH/SB tells you the OBJECT CANNOT CHANGE POSITION.)
- LOOK FOR STH/SB – He's looking for a job.
TYPE 4 (verb + two particles)
- LOOK FORWARD TO STH – I look forward to your answer.
