3. Read the text "Adventures in Central Asia" and check your answers to exercise 2.
From the immense deserts of Kara-Kum to the snows of the Tien Shan, the newly independent republics of
Central Asia have a natural beauty and grandeur easily matching their wealth of Silk Road treasures.
Our adventures start in Kirghizstan, a mountain paradise surrounded by deserts. The mountain-dwelling
Kirghizes are celebrated horsemen and many still spend the summer in remote yurt camps in the Tien Shan
("Heavenly Mountain"). We hike wonderful valleys with forests and glacial lakes, and relax at Lake Issyk-Kul
(the Kirghiz' "Sacred Sea"), an enormous alpine lake at 5.000 feet where we can ride horses and soak in hot
springs. After a raft trip on the Chu River, we move to the steppes of Kazakhstan to have birdwatch in the Aksu
Gorge wildlife reserve.

HEATHROW
Heathrow is London's major airport. It was opened in 1929 as a small base for flight
test, and became an international airport in 1946.
Over 40 million people pass through Heathrow each year and 1000 aircrafts
a day land and take off. More than 53000 people work at Heathrow airport.
There are 14 dogs which can smell drugs. There are four terminals. From
them you can fly direct to 85 countries. Heathrow is in the south - west
underground rail link which takes an hour to reach central London. There are
many robberies from passengers' luggage at the airport, and it is sometimes
called «Thiefrow».

TRANSPORT IN LONDON
1. Londoners are served by one of the most efficient and comprehensive transport systems in the
world. Red double - decker buses, one of the most familiar symbols of London life run services from
early morning to late in the evening. There are thirty all - night services too. Twelve of them are
labeled "tourist routes". These services are easily identified by a yellow band which runs round the
top deck, with destinations on the front which are also picked out in yellow. Buses should appeal to
the practical tourist.
2. You don't see the sights of London from a tube train - except those splendid wall - paintings
in the stations like Charing Cross., Tollenham, Courtoffers a good chance of getting to your
destination in time. Road and Finsbury Park. But in a traffic congested city, the Underground
London Transport's nine - line underground system is surprisingly easy to follow. Fares on the
underground are reasonable when compared to similar transport in oilier major cities throughout
the world. British Rail runs into and out of central London. Most local rail services run at 20 to 30
minute interval and there are good tube and bus connections at the main stations.

An active volcano may explode at any time.

The verb to erupt means to explode and pour out fire, and the action of erupting is called eruption.

Ballooning today has gone full circle. In many ways it is back where it was two hundred years ago. The
first balloons used hot air and were flown just for fun and the excitement of seeing earth glide by below. We
are back at that point again.
Those who have been up in a balloon speak of the comradeship of sharing a unique experience with others.
They talk of their feeling of complete detachment from things on the ground. Everything seems very far away.
They are surrounded by silence broken only by the faint sound of a dog's barking or a train whistle from below,

the balloon seems motionless, because it moves with the currents of air like a leaf on a stream. You cannot
feel the wind.
At night the feeling of detachment and aloneness is even more profound. Many balloonists say they have a
feeling of ecstasy while they are up in the air. When they arc back on the ground, their one desire is to go up
again.
Those who sail the ocean with only the wind for power feel that they alone know the ways of the sea.
Those who sail the sky propelled by the wind feel that they alone know the ways of the sky.

Harold is a bank manager in town. He's a health freak. He wants to live to be a hundred, so health is very important to
him.
He gets up at five o'clock in the morning and lifts dumb-bells for thirty minutes. For breakfast he eats a raw egg with
garlic and chili pepper. It tastes disgusting. He leaves for work at 7 o'clock. He never goes by bus and he thinks that
cars are extremely dangerous. He walks with a mask over his nose and mouth everywhere. He also wears a uniform in
his office which he designed to protect himself from dust and dirt.
At the office he washes his hands ten times a day and he wears gloves to pick up the telephone in case it "dirty".
He takes his lunch to work with him. He eats fifteen sunflower seeds and one onion. He is sure that the lunch which
the firm provides isn't good for him.

WHY IS SLEEP IMPORTANT?
It's well-known that sleep is an important part of good health. Sleep helps you feel good, work effectively
and think clearly.
Even mild sleeping problems can make daily life more difficult and less productive, decreasing your ability
to remember things, concentrate and cope with minor irritations. The result can be mistakes or problems at
work, strained relationships at home, and injury on the road. In fact, the National Traffic Safety
Administration estimates that more than 70,000 car accidents happen a year.

HOW MUCH SLEEP IS ENOUGH?
But what exactly is "a good night's sleep?"
In general most healthy adults need an average seven or eight hours of sleep. I lowever, there are some
people who feel ready to do everything after five hours of shut-eye. Others can't work effectively during the day
unless they've slept for 10 full hours. And, contrary to the common myth, the need lor sleep doesn't decline
with age.
So how do you measure how much sleep you truly need?
Watch yourself during a typical day. If you have boring or monotonous situations; problems with
colleagues, family or friends; or have difficulty concentrating or remembering facts, you're probably not
getting enough good sleep.

been the wind. Being very tired, he fell asleep, with a lighted cigarette in his hand.

The Director of the ecological association "Tabigat" answers the questions of our reporter.
On the Environmental Protection Day your organization was awarded with International "Global-500", the
Prize of the United Nations’ Environmental (UNEF). Could you tell us more about this award? And what
achievements have you been awarded for?
-Jimy Carter, the US ex-President and the Prime-Minister of Norway were awarded with it. So, now the
"Tabigat" Ecological Association has joined their company. We try to propose effective ways of solving the

Kazakhstan was established as the Republic of Kazakhstan in December 1991. The country is the second largest of the
former Soviet republics with a total land area of over 2,724.900 million square kilometers. This country shares its border
with the Russian Federation to the north and north-west; to the east with China and to the south with the central Asian
republics of Kirgyzstan Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
The Ural River flows through the western portion of Kazakhstan to the Caspian Sea. The central region of the
country includes the Kazakh Steppe to the north and deserts of central Asia in the south-west. The Altai mountains can
be found in the east….
Population
Census figures taken in 1995 put Kazakhstan’s population at 16.5 million with an annual growth rate of
0.62%. The country’s principal ethnic groups include Kazakh(44%), Russian (36%), Ukrainian (5%) ,
German (4%), Uzbek and Tatar (2%), Belarusian and Azerbaijani(1%), and other(5%). The urban-rural
distinction is almost evenly divided with 57% of the population living in urban areas.
LANDSCAPE
The landscape of Kazakhstan is a diverse one. It is bordered on the south, southwest and east by the Tien Shan,
Tarbagatai and Altai mountains. On its west the Caspian Sea is the home of sturgeon and Kazakhstan's oil reserves. In
the desert area of the southwest is the drying Aral sea. In the steppes of Sary Arka the Balkhash lake is located. Its
eastern part is fresh whereas in the west the water is salty. The lakes of Alakol, Tengiz and Zaisan are remarkable
for their beauty. In the north, over eighty picturesque lakes are lost among the pine forest of Kokshetay…

WILDLIFE
Today the wildlife of Kazakhstan includes 158 species of mammals, 458 species of birds, 52
species of reptiles, 12 species of amphibians, and 150 species of fish, 19 species of animals and
23 of birds. They are included into the International Red Book of rare or endangered animals. In
the mountains of the Zailiiski Alatau alone, there are about 50 species of mammals, 141 species of
birds and 3 species of fish. In the steppes herds of koulans and jeirans graze. Deserts are
inhabited with giant lizards, snakes and spiders. On the peaks of its mountains snow leopards mountain turkeys occur. Kazakhstan is inhabited with birds, marmots, wild sheep, the Tien Shan

Since ancient times Kazakhs have used falcon - baloban as hunting birds. Berkutchi - professional hunters - took
balobans' chickens out of their nests and trained them for hunting This tradition still exist. Perhaps the best place to see
falcons in the wild is in the Altai of the northeast Kazakhstan.

MEDEU
The world's famous skating rink Medeu was built in 1972 in a picturesque gorge located 15 km. from Almaty. Its 10,500 sq. meter ice area is the
best place for outdoor world competitions in speed skating, Russian hockey figure skating and other sports event! Special refrigerating equipment
provides the ice-cover of the skating field 8 months a year and ice tracks are kept ready for skating all year1 round. Over 120 world records have
been set there by the world’s strongest skaters. It is open for public skating December through March. Admission: about US $4. Skates rent are
available on the first floor outside of the rink. A hotel (the Premier Medeu ) is located near the rink. At 1691-metel above sea level, nature lover
will find beautiful mountain scene) surrounding the skating rink. The Medeu Gorge is bordered by mountain ridges: Kim asars on the west,
Kabyrgatau on its east, and Kunbel on the south-east. A road runs through Medeu gorge towards the Mynzhylky gorge. The gorge has 21,000
hectare of forests with birches, Tien Shan spruces, and mountain ashes.
One of the attractions is a dike built in the valley of the Kishkene Almaty River to protect the city from landslides. The dike's collector has an
impressive capacity of 6,000,000 cubic meters of water. It is this dike that has kept back a disastrous landscape in 1973.

London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example:
Trafalgar Square. There is a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in
1805. He is a national English hero. There is no traffic in the square.
Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is on the top she is at home. Here
you can see changing the guard. It happens every day at 11.30 a. m.
House of Parliament is the seat of the British Government. It's a very large building with beautiful
towers. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The
clock was made under his direction.
Westminster Abbey is a Royal Church. Here you can see many tombs of British Kings and Queens and
other famous people, such as: Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, and Thomas Hardy.
Tower of London was a fortress, a royal palace, later a prison. Now it is a museum. Many tourists
come to visit London and see all these places.

THE UK
The UK is the shortened word of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain
includes England, Scotland, and Wales and Northern Ireland. Although Britain is a unitary state, the
countries of in have separate national identities, variations in culture and tradition.
England is predominantly a lowland country, with the Pennine Chain, the Cumbrian mountains and the
Yorkshire moorlands in the north. Wales is a country of hills and mountains. Britain's highest mountain, Ben
Nevis (1,343 Hi i 106 ft) is in the central highlands of Scotland. Northern Ireland is at its nearist point only
21 km (13 miles) from Scotland.
Britain has frequent weather changes through the seasonal cycle of winter, spring, summer and autumn.

The subjugation of Wales by the English was completed in the late 13th century by Edward I, who gave his
infant son, later Edward II, the title of Prince of Wales - still carried today by the monarch's eldest son.
UNION OF SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND
Scotland remained a separate kingdom throughout the Middle Ages, often at war with England. Realizing the
benefits of closer political and economic union, England and Scotland agreed in 1707 on a single Parliament
for Great Britain. Scotland kept its own system of law and church settlement.
THE GROWTH OF THE EMPIRE
The 17th and 18th centuries saw considerable overseas expansion by Britain. Britain continued to extend its rule
through the 19th century over a large part of the world - a process from which the modern Commonwealth
eventually emerged. Until 1922 the country was called as Great Britain and Ireland. Now it's Great Britain
and Northern Ireland. It's a unitary state.

London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example:

On October 24, 1945 leaders from 51 countries met in San-Francisco and organized the United Nations.
Today, 191 countries, that is almost every country in the world is a member of the UN. Each country has signed
an agreement that says that it will help the UN in its actions for international peace and human rights to all
people. The main United Nations organization in New York City has a "family" of other organizations. The
organizations try to pro vide a better life for everyone. The organizations are UNICEF, UNDP and World
Health Organization.

• Empower women of the region by providing access to micro and small loans to women entrepreneurs
who do not have access to traditional sources of financing

Background: Since 1949, Semipalatinsk region served as the site for conducting nearly 500 nuclear tests.

The main share in the export of Kazakhstan to the USA belong to ferrous and non-ferrous metals, fuel,
chemical products.
Though the share of the USA in the foreign trade of Kazakhstan is not I very large, the USA is the largest
investor to the economy of Kazakhstan. In the year of 2001 American investments to Kazakhstan amounted to
USD 1,4 billion. The main part of the American capital is concentrated in the mineral resource industry, in
particular, in the oil and gas sector and is represented by such Kazakhstan-American Joint Ventures as the
Tengi Chevroil.

A British magazine interviewed 60 young people in their last year at school, and asked them questions about their future
(38 girls and 22 boys answered their questions).
The interviewers wanted to know who were the young people's heroes. The most popular characters for many of the
boys and girls were Pope John Paul II, and Torvill and Dean, the World Champion ice-skaters. Some of the wanted to be like
the footballer Kenny Dalglish, and the girls admired the pop singer Toyah Wilcox.

I left school when I was twelve and I had to get into service. I went to a young couple who were farmers, and
I had to live in. It was about fifteen miles from home and it seemed to me the back of beyond. It was a big

There was another maid there, and fortunately we got on well together. We could laugh and cover up for
each other if we did anything wrong. We slept in an attic, and we had to be up at six o'clock in the morning. If we
were a minute or two late, she’d be there and want to know why. I reckon she laid awake all night long, in the
pleasure of catching us out in the morning.

LOST CHILDHOOD, LOST FUTURE
A 14-year-old boy grimaces as he struggles to haul a giant fishing net hom the angry waves that crash
below him. For nine months, Bounali Kliuumora (Boo-nah-lee See-mamoor-ah) has toiled seven days a
week, 10 hours a day, on a rickety fishing pier stranded in the middle of the ocean, 10 mill's off the coast of
Indonesia. As he sorts his catch, Bounali is careful to livoid the painful sting of jellyfish and sea snakes
tangled in the net.
"1 work from 8 in the morning until 6 at night", says Bounali, wiping sweat nil his forehead as the sun beats

Redundancy is now common in many countries. People are losing their jobs because business is bad. What
do these people do when they have no job and lose their wages? Firstly, every redundant worker must decide
how to spend his "golden handshake" - his redundancy payment. Most people either spend it all at once, or use
it to live on until they find a new job. But SOUK-people start a new life with it.

Aset 25, could not find a job when he left school, so he went to college. He passed his exam, but he is no
nearer to getting a job now.
"I get 1000 tg. a week benefit, but it doesn't go far", said Aset.
Aset goes to the job sentre every week. "I'm at a difficult age", he said. "I want to do electronics or
engineering, but most firms with training schemes want someone younger than me".
Most Aset's college friends found work, so the days are long and lonely. Asan worked as a plumber for
three years. Now he is on the dole he says he feels poorer than a school leaver who has never had any money.
His last wages were 5000 tg. a week. But now he gets unemployment benefit of only 1200 tg. a week.
If he does not get a job soon, he is going to sell his car. "I only use it when I go to a job centre or to
interviews", he says. "When I go out in the evenings, I walk. Petrol is so expensive".
But even without a job, Asan has a busy time. He goes three or four job centres every week, and he keeps
fit with football.
"My Dad always told me to get a good training", he says. "Two weeks ago I went to listen to a talk about
starting your own business. If I don't find a job soon, I'm going to work for myself.

London Sightseeing Tour
London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example:
Trafalgar Square. There is a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in
1805. He is a national English hero. There is no traffic in the square.
Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is on the top she is at home. Here
you can see changing the guard. It happens every day at 11.30 a. m.
House of Parliament is the seat of the British Government. It's a very large building with beautiful
towers. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The
clock was made under his direction.
