The project
„A Good Deed for the Smallest“
lends a hand to the premature babies born in the Tallinn Central
Hospital and Pelgulinna Maternity Hospital
We all wish and hope that our children are born when
the time is right, but sometimes this is not so. Some
babies arrive sooner than expected and they will be
taken care of in the neonatology departments. They
have special equipment - incubators – where the tiny
babies are kept in conditions similar to the mother’s
womb. The next “home” where the little ones are
pampered and nurtured, is the waterbed. The
temperature of the mattress can be regulated so that
the premature babies do not spend all the energy they
get from food on maintaining their own body
temperature.
Babies need love and warmth to grow. Their parents
give them love, but warmth comes from clothes and/or
blankets. This is how you, who you have a BIG HEART,
can help those who cannot yet help themselves.
Hats
– should be without strings, easy to put on. Please
use ribbed knitting. The depth of the hat should be 10-13
cm, so it fits head circumference of 22-30 cm.
Socks – should be for foot size 5-7 cm. Bootees with laces
are best. The ribbed leg part of the socks should be
longer, so that the babies won’t lose them.
Blankets for incubators and waterbeds – the key words here
are volume and lightness.
a) 85*75 cm – woollen blankets, in thicker lace
pattern, from knitted/crocheted elements are
preferable. Fleece blankets are good as well.
Fleece blankets with a lining (and a thin layer of
cotton batting in between) are another option.
Sewn blankets should be quilted, to make them
machine washable.
b) 35*75 cm – blankets made of laceweight wool or
quilted blankets of soft cotton (flannel, soft
chintz, fleece) are preferable. Cotton batting or
fleece could be used between the outer layers of
quilted blankets, to make them machine
washable.
Woollen wrap cardigans
If you would like to do something to help the babies
and their worried parents, find more information at:

or find us on
Facebook:

– these are best for premature
babies, for they are easy to put on without having to
move the child too much. The cardigans should have
laces that can be tied in front. Measurements: height 20
cm, width 17 cm, sleeve length 12 cm, sleeve width 5
cm, shoulder length 6 cm. Slightly larger cardigans are
also welcome.
Sewn baby clothes – wrap jackets, baby pants.
Flannel sheets – 40*40 cm.
Cotton sheets in cheerful colours – 80*80 cm or 70*70 cm.
Yarn
When choosing yarn, keep in mind two important
things:
1) The yarn must be machine washable, since hand
wash is not possible in hospitals.
2) The yarn must be really soft, suitable for wearing
against the naked skin – this is how the
premature babies wear the clothes in order to
derive maximum heat from the wool. Knitted
items made of 100% wool or high wool content
baby yarn are the best.
