SEDIMENTARY ROCK
READ THE SECTION AS YOU WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT!
1. Describe the general process by which sedimentary rocks are formed. Include the words
“compaction” and “cementation”. (SUMMARIZE the introductory paragraph – don’t copy it.)

Formation of Sedimentary Rocks
2. Define:
Clastic sedimentary rock ____________________________________________________________
Chemical sedimentary rock _________________________________________________________
Organic sedimentary rock __________________________________________________________
Clastic Sedimentary Rocks
3. The book describes three types – determined by the size of the rock fragments. Describe these
three types and give an example rock name for each. There are examples of each of these in the
room – LOOK AT THEM – IT REALLY HELPS TO SEE AND FEEL THE ACTUAL ROCKS.

4. Two types are described. Describe each of these, and give an example rock name for each:

Organic Sedimentary Rocks
5. Describe what these are, and tell how they are are formed. Give the names of three organic
sedimentary rocks.

Sedimentary Rock Features
6. What is stratification? ___________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
7. How does “cross-bedding” happen? _________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
(I have some pictures of this from a trip a few years ago – I’ll show them in front of room.)
Look at the pictures at the top of p. 186 for examples of ripple marks and mud cracks. Remember
that these are pictures of ROCK. Pretty obvious how these formed.
Fossils
8. What are fossils? ________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
IMPORTANT: Nearly ALL fossils are found in sedimentary rock. Why are fossils never found in
igneous rock? ____________________________________________________________________
Concretions
Look at the picture of the “geode”. How are these formed? ________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
We have several examples of geodes in the room. LOOK AT THEM – THEY’RE COOL!
