and the Brain” on Tuesday, June 17
SILVERTHORNE, CO – June 16, 2014 – Keystone Symposia is pleased to invite the local Summit
County community to the Silverthorne Town Pavilion on Tuesday evening, June 17 for a free public
forum on “Chronic Pain, Migraine and the Brain” with two eminent pain scientists and a local
physician who specializes in pain management. The event will run from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. Brief
presentations from the three panelists will be followed by discussion and audience Q&A.
The event is being held in conjunction with Keystone Symposia’s scientific research conference
entitled “The Brain: Adaptation and Maladaptation in Chronic Pain” that runs from June 15 to June
20 at the Keystone Lodge & Spa. The conference convenes more than 100 of the world’s leading
pain researchers to present and discuss their cutting-edge work.
At the community forum, the lead organizer of Keystone Symposia’s pain scientific conference, Dr.
Frank Porreca, Professor of Pharmacology and Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona, will talk
about the science of pain, the problems of opioids and addiction, and the need for new therapeutic
solutions. The author of more than 450 original, peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Porreca has been
recognized as a “Highly Cited” investigator by PubMed and one of the 10 most cited
pharmacologists in the world by the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental
Therapeutics. For his discoveries on the adaptive nature of the brain following nerve injury, Dr.
Porreca was honored by the American Pain Society with the Frederick W. Kerr Award for Basic
Research in Pain.
Dr. David Dodick, Professor of Neurology and consultant neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in
Scottsdale, Arizona, will discuss migraine and in particular its causes and effects on the brain over
time as well as current and future treatment directions. Dr. Dodick is the Program Director of the
Mayo Clinic Neurology Residency Program and Headache Medicine Fellowship Program, as well as
Medical Director of its Headache Program and Concussion Program. He is board-certified by the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Psychiatry and
Neurology (ABPN) and has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored
eight books. He serves as President-Elect of the International Headache Society, the Immediate
Past-President of the American Headache Society and Chair of the American Migraine Foundation.
Dr. Ross Dickstein, a local anesthesiologist specializing in spinal pain and interventional pain
medicine from his medical practice in Frisco, will provide a clinical and local perspective. Dr.
Dickstein was formerly an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland
before moving to Summit County 15 years ago.
