UNIT SUMMARY

In this unit, your pupils will talk about what we see in the sky and learn some essential characteristics of the Solar System. Pupils begin by refreshing what they learned the year before, i.e. basic concepts about the Sun and the

Moon. Pupils will be introduced to the eight planets of the Solar System.

They Hill understand that the planets, including the Earth, move around the

Sun and that the Moon moves around the Earth. Pupils will talk about the seasons and will understand why we have day and night.

Practical physical demonstrations and visual support will help pupils understand how the Earth and Moon rotate and why we have day and night.

There is some new vocabulary in this unit, but pupils will be familiar with the majority of the terms used. For this reason, this unit is a good starting point for the year. Nonetheless, make sure you concept check as you progress through the unit, and continually recycle new language.

5

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

In this unit, your pupils will learn to appreciate their planet, realising that

Earth is the only planet we have to live on. Therefore, encourage pupils to recognise the importance of looking after it. Throughout the unit, try to encourage pupils to think about:

How Earth is only one small part of the Solar System

How light influences our activities

What we can do to look after the environment

Make a difference

The Make a difference page in this unit encourages pupils to observe people’s actions in their immediate environment and decide whether or not they are looking after it. The activities focus on how to look after our planet and behave responsibly as citizens. Pupils will work together in groups to conduct a survey to see how ‘green’ or responsible their classmates are in relation to the environment. Finally, pupils will then be encouraged to reflect on and draw conclusions about the results of the class survey they participated in.

UNIT SUMMARY

In this unit, pupils review and extend their basic knowledge of concepts relating to air and weather.

Pupils begin by refreshing what they learned the previous year. They are then introduced to some instruments which are used to measure weather.

Finally, pupils will go on to observe and understand the different types of wind and precipitation and how to interpret weather maps and symbols.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

In this unit, pupils will consider the impact our daily lives have on climate and how we must make sure we look after the environment. Throughout the unit, try to encourage pupils to think about:

What we can do to look after the environment and slow down climate change and global warming.

How air pollution can have harmful effects on both the atmosphere and on all living things.

How everyone can participate in daily activities that can save energy and reduce pollution.

Make a difference

The Make a difference page in this unit focuses on understanding the simple things we can do in our daily lives to save energy. The leaflet encourages pupils to be aware of their own environmental behaviour and to raise awareness amongst their families about saving energy.

UNIT SUMMARY

In this unit pupils will examine the different natural features and man-made features in the World around them. The unit provides relevant examples and photos of features from around Spain, creating interest in a familiar context. Pupils will distinguish between inland and coastal features and focus on the course of a river. They will learn how to describe and refer to the different stages of a river.

Pupils will also study different types of rocks and minerals and appreciate the variety that can be found in Spain and in their own local area. They Hill notice how many man-made features are made of rocks and minerals.

There is a lot of vocabulary in this unit so make sure you provide opportunities for recycling and reusing it.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

In this unit, pupils will consider the impact the natural world has on our lives and how we must make sure we look after the environment and its natural resources. Pupils will also learn that landscapes are being constantly altered by human activity. Throughout the unit, try to encourage pupils to think about:

The importance of protecting the natural features of landscapes.

What we can do to look after the environment.

How we can be careful with water and not waste it.

How to behave when we are in (national) parks.

Make a difference

The Make a difference page in this unit focuses on looking after protected natural areas. Pupils will read some information about three of Spain’s most well-known national parks.

The poster encourages pupils to be aware of their own environmental behaviour.

Pupils will understand the concept of a job and start examining the types of jobs they are more familiar with. These will include domestic chores, which they are encouraged to take part in, and jobs that people do at their school.

UNIT SUMMARY

In this unit your pupils will learn and talk about how people, places and things change with time. The beginning of the unit sensitizes pupils to the

Fac. that these changes can be seen in our towns and old buildings, and pupils should be encouraged to think about the reasons why these changes happen. Pupils will notice how objects change or transform, and how there are things we have today that didn’t exist in the past.

Pupils will notice how they themselves have changed over time. They will create a timeline to identify the major events in their life so far and how they see themselves in the future. They will reflect on the differences between their life and the life of their parents. Pupils will understand that we can measure the passage of time with clocks, calendars and timetables.

They will use appropriate time expressions to describe when events took place.

There is a lot of new vocabulary and many new concepts in this unit, so it is essential that you concept check as you progress through the unit, and continually recycle new language.

VALUES AND ATTITUDES

In this unit, your pupils will learn to appreciate the importance of history and the reminders we have today of the past. They will understand that our way of life now and the things that make our life easier today are thanks to what has be done before.

Throughout the unit, try to encourage pupils to think about:

Why looking after historical places and monuments is important.

Why we should appreciate things that make our life easier.

How parents and grandparents can help understand the past and the present.

Make a difference

The Make a difference page in this unit encourages pupils to observe the different ways we use a calendar to help us organise our time. The pairwork activity encourages pupils to design and make a calendar for one month and highlight important dates and events. The activity aims to make pupils appreciate the usefulness of a calendar for planning.
